Am I the only one to consider this

I am told i need a corsette for under my wedding dress by the dress store and a friend. She looked at me funny when i told her i would rather use white duct tape (with gauze to protect the tender spots) than to spend $70 on a peice of clothing no one will see and i will only wear once. I have also tried it on with out anysupport at all and it looks fine to me. I have looked at walmart they dont have a design that will work with the dress, I am also looking on ebay. what would you do?

Depends on the dress, though regardless I do not recommend duct tape...I think that would win some kind of wedding night horror story . Remember you will be in that thing for a loooooong day (no the hours aren't that long, but the day sure is!)

Mine was more expensive than I care to admit, though I wore it more than once (I wear it over another shirt for renfest...) you might want to consider shopping at department stores or even specialty store...cheaper than a 'wedding' corsette though not free...Just make sure what you get is designed for support, not for show...(one designed to be stripped off in 5 minutes wont be made to support you the whole wedding day)

worst comes to worse you can pack it with the dress to sell or store for daughters.

I would try to find one you LIKE so that if you have to spend $70 on it you like it and wear more than one. They do not have to be ugly, they can be pretty then you can wear it again.

A corsette or a girdle? I've got a girdle made of thick spandex that is comfy, inexpensive AND sucks it in just the slightest bit. You can get one a bit smaller that'll really do the job. All you need is a little smoothing, right? If you go to an undergarment department or store (not Victoria's Secret), they'll help fit you for one in your price range. A corsette sounds rather drastic, yes?

I went without one for my wedding, I also felt like it looked fine without it (wore strapless bra instead). I tried them on at the dress store with my dress and without I couldn't see much of a difference. I agree with above poster that if you feel you need extra support you can find cheaper undergarments that will do the job, be much cheaper, and you might actually use again.

I wore a longline strapless bra .. I think I paid $45 for it at either Macy's or JC Penney's. I have worn it since - as a bridesmaid, and under a dress that had spaghetti straps. You don't have to spend $70 unless your dress requires something specific that only this $70 undergarment provides. But I do highly recommend quality undergarments under your dress. You do NOT want to be uncomfortable on your wedding day - things are going to be stressful enough!

I would second what most people said above. The less things you have to buy at a wedding shop the better. They know how to gouge you! But, you do need support. I made the mistake of thinking my halter top could hold up my girls, and I was WAY wrong.

When you are trying on your dress, don't just stand there like a princess. I know you ARE a princess but the whole day you will be sitting and standing and kneeling (maybe) and dancing and hugging and jumping around, etc. Do all of that! Make sure you are comfortable in whatever position you are in! Don't just look in the mirror with your stomach pulled in

I would suggest JC Penneys or even Walmart. You can get some from there, don't take the tags off, try it on with your dress, and return the ones you don't want. The lady at Walmart actually told me to do that.

No, not a chick thread. Maybe you have a great idea that your SO, mom, sister etc used on her wedding day.

In my case I agree with what cptacek said; "you do need support." But if you normally do not wear any support for the girls, that could be a different story. Try doing the YMCA in the dressing room in the dress, if the girls stay in and your MIL in the room is not fainting your good.

Well, I might just have to go re-read the underwear chapter in the official Chickness Guide, 'cause I don't entirely understand what's being talked about here. Getting married or not, though, there's no way I would wear stuff the keeps me from breathing normally or which digs into my flesh. Outer garments that require torturous inner garments are going to be rejected. What in the world does a corset have to do with "the girls" (hate that usage)? A corset squeezes the waist and abdomen, does it not? Hope you aren't getting married in the summer and thinking of wearing this inner rubber suit,. Yiiihhh! Wouldn't it be better for a wedding dress to make you look good, than for you to be molded and formed to make a dress look good? Hey, if duct tape does whatever it is you want it to do, if it won't hurt your skin, and if it would be comfortable, why not use it?

If you think it looks fine without it then don't get it. I ended up buying a slip for $50 when I swore I wouldn't. I tried it on and it looked much better with it and it made it a little more comfortable so I splurged but if it looks the same without it then don't get it

Joan - I wore something like this: JC Penney Lilyette Longline Bra. No bones/ribbing to squeeze me like a sausage... but it did flatten out the bumps and give me a much nicer line underneath my dress. I wore an A-line dress, so no girdle necessary to smooth out the bumps on the south end.

Irma - There it is for $35. I highly recommend at least trying it on.

I dunno the fashion definition of girdle, but I do know I was talking about support, and many are talking about a bit of extra smoothing. I don't think anyone expects the bride not to breath, but you would be surprised at how comfortable a decent corset can be..support above, reminder to keep the back straight and some smoothing in the midsection. All worth the lacing process IMO.

Now if anyone is suggesting joining the lady with the worlds thinest waist, they should be drawn and quartered.

BTW I was laughing at the 'do the YMCA' suggestion! I wish I had tried that with a formal dress or two!
