Default AHHHHHH! Christmas gift mistake

I found the perfect sweater for my sister a few months ago and bought it for Christmas for her - she just came over today wearing the exact same sweater! I said, "Did I give that to you?" and she said that she found it a couple of months ago on sale and bought it. That means a gift I thought I had done is not and I have no idea what to get her. Not to mention losing the $35 I paid for the sweater since it won't fit me.

Ahh the beauty of Christmas season... Well for the most part anyway. Does it still have the tag on it? Retailers used to be a little more loose with returns and you might luck up on a retailer thats not tracking your returns or insisting on a gift receipt. You might be able to take back the sweater (and get its sale price) which won't have you completely out of the 35 you spent. You might even find her a replacement gift in the same store. Its worth a shot if the sweater still has at least the tag...

I'm going to try this weekend. The tags are still on, but it was marked "on sale, no returns"so I'm not too hopeful.

No luck at all with the sweater. They wouldn't take it back as I figured. I'm not sure what I will do with it and I still haven't found another gift!

At this point, I would suggest consigning it or selling it on ebay. At least you could get something for it... Sorry things didn't go the way you had hoped...

That has happened to me a few times. Maybe you know someone else you could give it to?

Did you have the receipt? If not, does your sister have the receipt from the one she bought? If so, you could use that one. Is there another store in the area that you could try returning it to (different salesperson may yield different result)? If not, you could always donate it and take the deduction.
