Question Looking for Cheap or Free Photo Editing Software

I was wondering if any of the techies around here know of a good cheap or free photo editing software program? It needs to be able to combine photographs and to manipulate images. Having it be relatively idiot proof would be nice, too! I've looked at GIMP a little bit but I'd like to know what others think of it and any other ones out there.

Well I know Photobie will allow you to combine multiple photos in the form of layers and then merge them into one -- but I have not really used the program and cannot speak for its ease of use (or lack thereof).

There's a tutorial, "Club," and it's freeware software (for personal use).... so it may be close to what you're looking for.

Photobie: free image editor, photo editor, screen capture ( screencapture ), GIF animation, flash jukebox, digital scrapbooking, photo viewer, icon editor etc

GIMP is a very nice, powerfull and complete software, but not what I would call idiot proof! It's more like a free open source version of Photoshop. I use it for basic task (crop, resize, merge, ...), and find it easy, but I realize that while not a graphic pro, I'm a very tech savvy girl.

I have been using Inkscape to make my wedding papergoods. It is similar to Paintshop pro and works with .svg files. It has a very nice tutorial on how to use it included with the program.

Another good one is part of the open office work group and called Draw. Both applications are free.
