I'm not talking about cars and houses here. What is the most expensive thing you have ever bought for yourself personally? I'm wondering because I had a friend show me her $7500 coat that she bought for herself this weekend. I know they don't have the money and I have know idea what she is thinking. My jaw was left hanging open.
I think the most I've ever spent is $500 on a really nice set of place settings. I can't even imagine spending that kind of money on a coat (that will only be worn a few times at most). |

That must be one nice coat. It cost about the same as my car!
I bought myself a beautiful necklace that I had wanted for a long time that was about $600. That is probably the most I have ever spent on myself. |

Umm zero, but my husband on the other hand is in the habit of buying really nice stuff, umm was. I have he hardest time reigning him in.
Anyway I have a gorgeous set of rings, and neclace and errings to match around 500 for the set. bought in the pre baby days! well maybe one kid. We didn't get it all at once. |

A few months ago I bought myself a $1500 Digital SLR camera. It was one of those moments when I became possessed by the "I gotta have it" and "I deserve it" demons. I am really into portrait photography and would love to use that camera to make some money- that was my justification. We ended up carrying our Visa debt a few months longer because of that grand purchase. On the brighter side, Dh didn't have to buy me a birthday present and isn't buying me anything for Christmas because I consider that my gift for both occasions.

Well, aside from my mattress that was $600 last month... (Yuck), the most expensive thing was probably my digital camera as well, which was about $200. I've both things more expensive, but have always ended up returning them. I just feel so guilty. My most expensive suit is about $140. Maybe I deserve a treat!

I can't recall buying myself anything that expensive although I have received some gifts that have been expensive. The silver tableware set was the most expensive. I think it was close to $1000

Everyone's purchase seem a bit more reasonable than my friend's coat. Although it is a beautiful coat, I still can't believe she would pay that much. If they were very wealthy it would be a different matter, but they have quite a bit of credit card debt and a huge house payment. granted, her husband makes a nice salary, but if it is all going to paying off purchases like that, they are going to have some real trouble down the raod. How do you warn someone like that?

I don't think you can, spnding is like a drug, you have to want to change yourself.
But if it was my friend I would prolly mention the cost of a coat like that on my credit card (never theirs) In a joking kind of wow way. |

Trips: I love to travel and could easily spend $3500 on a three week trip. I don't charge them though

I did, when I must have been dilusional, purchase a pair of shoes for 500.00. Had to have them. I have over 300 pair so they had to go with the collection. But sadly, they had to be disposed of within a year. The material deteriorated for some strange reason and the company wouldn't refund my money. Some shoes in my collection I've had since the early 80's and they are just fine and get worn at least once a year.
My most expensive item was purchased for the low-low. I have a mink that the original owner paid 10,000 for, but desparate times call for desparate measures and I brought it from her for 100 bux. Couldn't pass up on that deal. And yes, I have the original receipt, she paid 10 grand for it! |

It will be a bargain for someone else (just as in your case). |

Let me know when she wants to liquidate.... Actually thats the way I get a lot of things. I sit like a vulture and keep friends who like to live like the jones'. But funny, when they need money, they come to me with their goods.

About 2 yrs ago I bought myself a full size Tempurpedic bed set for around $1400.00.
It's been a wise investment. I have a bad back and was always restless on regular mattresses, tossing and turning, always waking up tired. Now, I wake up refreshed, no sore back, have been able to stop seeing the chiropractor for almost a year. I was a bit apprehensive about the purchase beforehand because it seemed like there was a lot of "hype" about this type of bedding/mattress to be found on tv, papers, and the internet. I would recommend this bed to anyone who asks about it. The bed should last me for a good 20 yrs or so and if it does it will average out to $70 a year. Since I spend about 1/3 of my life in bed, I figured why not get something of quality? |

Mine would be a big screen TV. (68 inches) It was $4000, but I got the store floor display, so it was knocked down to $3,200. I had a Sears certificate that said if I charged anything I would get 10% off. (So, I got an additional $320 off) My card was paid in full, so I charged the TV-there was a promotion going on at Sears that for a big ticket item, you got 90 days same as cash. I had the cash for the TV, so I let it sit in savings for 90 days to draw a little interest, then I went into the local Sears and paid it off in full. The main reason I got it was (before I got divorced) my husband was having bad eye problems, and had several eye surgeries. It was impossable for him to read or watch a regular TV. He could see this one fine. He left it when he moved out as he didn't have a room big enough for it where he was moving too.

Well, actually I duped my husband into buying it for me. He told me I could have a new sewing machine of my choice for Christmas one year. So I pick out a $4000 Bernina sewing/embroidery machine. He renigged, but later relented.

I had a girlfriend who did that--he threw a fit, but now, 7 years later he is quite happy-she now has a booming embrodery business-does monagrams and such-started with that machine and a small ad in the local paper. She has since paid for that machine over and over and does it out of her basement-which enables her to be an at home mom now.

An above ground pool at the end of summer. $1850. Our previous one had collapsed and we had this awful hole. Problem is, it's a little bigger & taller than the previous one. Hub will have to make changes to the deck & ground. He is a wee bit upset about me creating new work for him. The project will begin in the spring...
