What's the longest period of time you've held a job?
And what was the shortest? For me, the longest was just 7 years, as a writer for a financial services company that sold mutual funds and annuities. I stayed cus the $$ was great, but eventually my commute and the workload killed me. The shortest was probably just a few months. I remember 2 small businesses that hired me, then let me go, not long after. At one of them, the owner was a demanding dictator who i later learned had a rep for hiring and firing employees like she was changing clothes. She was also freaking out cus she had 2 miscarriages and was desperate to get pregnant. I believe the deciding factor was that as a writer with no previous small business experience, i asked someone for help in preparing a package for FedEx, and she was pissed i didn't know how to do that. At the other, she acknowledged i was a good writer but had other expectations she hadn't spelled out and didn't feel i was meeting them.

The shortest job of my life was 2 hours. I got a job at McDonald's running the register. Since it was all computer and the girl was a foot taller than I, I could not figure it out. I asked to leave and did not bother to get paid at all.

Shortest- 5 days. I quit after seeing the paper work time equalled the actual work accomplished time, seeing the supervisor who did nothing but sit and yap at her supervisees while they did that paperwork, and hearing the racism spewing from said supervisor. This was a government job. I did not want to be part of the waste nor hear the racism.
Bummer 'cause the actual work was interesting and valuable. Longest- 7 years. Two different jobs of that length. |

In college a bunch of my friends worked at a cannery over the summer.
I tried it for four hours and left after lunch. It was noisy, smelly, messy, and hot. And it really didn't pay all that well! |

My shortest was 1 day. I worked at a security company that had its business in a house. The office was an add on , extrememly low ceilings, and a bunch of cats all over the place. Before I get cat lover's hate mail, I personally love cats. I have one that lives outside. She was a stray, but I feed her. Anyway, between the low ceilings, cats jumping all over the desks, I couldn't take it. So, it was 1 day for me.
