The better question is, why is this on a television show? Is this entertainment for some segment of sad, pathetic people out there?
All of that garbage from the old "Lifestyles of the Rich of Famous" to "Cribs" and the like is just foolishness.

i remember a video on the internet a few years ago, this teenage girl was given an expensive car (jaguar or mercedes or something) for her bday and she started whining and pitching a fit because it was the "wrong color". her brother was filming and got the whole thing... it was on youtube i believe.

Honestly, I don't remember. That was 21 years ago, lol. I know it wasn't a huge thing though! These idiots who are raising useless, spoiled rotten brats make me sick. Have you ever seen that stupid show "My sweet 16" - or whatever it's called? Sick making.

That show is ridiculous- it shows those kids for the narcissistic spoiled, little brats that they will probably never outgrow.
As for me, I spent it alone. I had one of those workaholic families of the 1980s- they had better places to be. For the life of me, I can't figure out where my friends were, I just remember sitting alone in the backyard listening to some neighbor kids have a party.

I got a sweet 91 honda accord for $3000 and I cherished that car until it died. Yes, I consider myself a bit spoiled having my parents buy me the car, but I turned out fine and appreciate the knowledge of finances that I picked up from my parents throughout my life.

There's a MTV show called "My Super Sweet 16" where these little spoiled brats have a party that can rival a celebrity wedding........ makes me sick

I think my permit came on my birthday so I wasn't exactly at car license time.
I think I got a keychain for my future car ( a 1973 Mercury Comet that I piad with my own money - a total bomb) and a couple of driving accessories, maybe some clothes.
My parents generously paid the car insurance - I paid gas and repairs.
I am eternally grateful.

I must say I am surprised at the animosity towards the brats.
I don't know why but I just don't feel jealousy, annoyance or anything when I see that stuff. Maybe a little pity and bewilderment but I really don't care if a guy wants to blow a lot of money on his kid.
Unless my son is marrying that girl, I guess.

For my 16th birthday I hosted a murder mystery set in the 1920s. My parents gave me 4 or 5 books-each priced between $40-60. They were on the history of Broadway, history of beauty, Coco Chanel, and a couple musical books.

My mom and I went out to eat after we visited my dad in the hospital. He had cataract surgery -- 30 years ago it was not an outpatient surgery and you stayed days in the hospital afterwards.

A homemade cake with candles after supper (no ice cream). This is how my family celebrated all birthdays. It was not a gift-giving occasion.

I don't remember either. Sad my memory is so horrible seeing how I'm also still in my 20s. My exgirlfriend loved that show, it made me want to throw up. Stupid whinny ass people!

I've got a follow-up birthday idea
How about a trip to a homeless shelter to serve cake and ice cream to those folks? And a couple of hours where she sits down and talks to people so she has some grounding on the planet Earth?
One Christmas I was in line at a coffee shop when the guy in front of me announced that he'd bought all three of his teenagers new Chevy Blazers for Christmas. I thought that was ridiculous, but this takes the (birthday) cake.

I'll be 50 this year and I still remember! Elton John's Follow the Yellow Brick Road double album. I can probably still sing along every word of every song (if I hear the music and Elton starts singing, not off the top of my head!).
My parents were both teachers and didn't make much money. That is probably the only time in my childhood I got something I really, really wanted and it was a total surprise. It was leaned up against the wall at the bottom of the stairs the morning of my birthday (December 22).
