I really can't understand why a parent would buy a child such an expensive gift. It seems to be ingraining poor habits. However, I could see how this could happen when people are living in an enviorment surrounded by the ultra-wealthy and this type of activity is not uncommon or expected.

I remember exactly what my parents got me. I got a turquoise sweater, a pair of jeans, a pair of turquoise socks that matched the sweater exactly, two Anne McCaffrey books from the Dragonrider's of Pern series, a journal, and a package of mutli-colored pens for writing in it. Guess why I remember? I wrote it in the journal. And they took a picture of me wearing the clothes and holding the stuff. I still have the sweater, well, my daughter does. I still love it.

Mine was about 24 years ago but I asked for a mustang and got one, A MATCHBOX! my parents thought it was hilarious! Not me of course until years later. For my dtr, I bought her a $500 dodge daytona, but she had to pay for the tags and the insurance. after that she was on her own for vehicles. I feel that if one can buy a car for their child that is great but you don't need to buy one that is so expensive. my dtrs car lasted her over a year until she saved enough to buy what she wanted. She sold the daytona and the people who bought it still have it 5 years later!

I got a Laura Ashley outfit (which my mom now has actually), some books . . . and I got to go see Cats on Broadway with my mom. (We were living less than 30 minutes away from NYC at that time.)

A pizza party with all my friends, and I think my parents gave me a set of luggage...nothing too flashy!
