I bought some frozen shrimp that turned out to be from China. Huh? I will avoid that in the future, because I do not have a healthy view of the critters that live in Chinese estuaries. Poor China, so much pollution.

Funny this topic came up....
I just got back from the grocery store where I had seen generic garlic powder that said it was made in China. When I read that, I put it back and bought the name brand instead at a much higher price. China is one of those countries where I don't trust food safety or quality. |

hmm... i don't know about recently but i do know i definately have stuff from lots of places including china...
i'll have to start checking the food labels... i actually have to older purses that were made in America =)... some older clothing... and a couple other things... generally i find things that are older, possibly vintage, have a higher chance of being made in the US.... i also have some cutco cutlery from when i worked for them in college... that's all i can think of... |

Sometimes I wonder if it's possible to buy anything that isn't made in China! Will we have any manufacturing industry left?
Recently I've really been making an effort to buy American. The last things I bought were a sauce pan and a comforter, both made in Wisconsin. The prices were higher than the imports, but the quality is very good. These items also came with limited warranties. |

Most things I buy are not from China.
Recently a lot of faux-fur trimmed coats from China were found to be made with dog fur. With the quality control like that, I don't trust anything from that country. I am from Taiwan, though....and I always loved things that were made in Taiwan. Taiwanese goods are of superior quality. |

I honestly don't care too much. I evaluate the goods I buy for quality/craftsmanship, but we're part of a global economy now. I don't think the money I spend on overseas products is mis-spent. I can see lots of good coming from it.

[quote=shelbylovesmelby][b]Is it possible anymore to buy things not made in China?
What was the most recent thing you bought that wasn't made in China? The paint, adhesives, and paper I buy for my paper mache was made or recycled in the USA, Canada, and France. Nothing in my work comes from China. |

Tillamook cheese from Oregon, Organic Valley Milk from Washington, and grapes from Chile (not my favorite place to buy from but I wanted those grapes). Oh, and series 2 of the new Doctor Who dvds from England!

fresh fruits and veggies from the San Luis Obispo farmers market. I do agree though we live in a global economy so it doesn't bother me too much where it's made as long as it is good quality and a good price.

I did some looking without buying yesterday and saw lots of clothing from countries other than China. India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, El Salvador. I was at J.C. Penney and Target.
The pistachios I had with breakfast were from California. That's cool. We didn't used to grow pistachios in the USA and they cost a lot more when they were imported. THe homegrown are cheaper. When I got my new sofa a couple years ago and my Chinese friends asked me about it, they were surprised to hear it was from China. They had no idea even furniture was being made in their country and shipped here. When I answered their question as to how much I paid for the sofa, they just about fell off of it! Then they understood why there could be profit to have it built in China and shipped here for sale. BTW, he is an engineer with an American company that is probably going to move some of their production to China. He is still a citizen of China, but he fears losing his own job in the US now. |
