With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I'm wondering what "date night" is like in your frugal house? [G- or PG-rated responses only, please.]
Here's a recent one in our house: "Hey honey, I'm going to the bank tomorrow. Wanna help me roll these pennies from the coin jar?" ![]() |

A card, a bite to eat out, and a box of dark chocolate.

I'll admit that Valentine's day and our anniversary are my "less than frugal" times. Example, I spent about $315 so far on my wife for V-day. That doesn't include the $25-$50 I'll spend to take her out to dinner tomorrow. Granted, I bought her something this year that accounts for about $285 of the $315. The norm is about $50-100 on V-day.

Dh and I do not do gifts for Valentines Day. There's nothing we really want or need. We go out when we can - this year, we are going to try to do lunch and a movie tomorrow afternoon (we have gift certificates for both), since he bowls tomorrow night in a league.
Princess, too funny! |

It's not that big of a deal around our house either. If we go out, it'll be on the weekend. After 23 of these days together, it's just another day to say "I love you". And you shouldn't have to spend a lot of money to do that.

A homemade heart shaped veggie burger....homemade heart shaped pancakes....2 little fish for the aquarium....a lawn rake!
That last one illustrates the practicality we usually (not always) display with respect to gifts. Don't get out much for dates because of the 2 little kids. Went out for dessert last weekend for Valentines day and splurged on 3 pots of chocolate/coffee/tea at a very wonderful restaurant we love. |

Our church youth group is having a Valentines Spaghetti supper! And it's free! Plus our kids will be serving us and they are so excited!! I think it will be a special Valentines day!

I spent about $3.00 and bought 2 pkgs of candy apiece for the 3 guys here. If any 'going out' is done, I've got less than $10 on a gift card to a nice place where The Hubster and I could go for coffee and a shared dessert, but only if we feel up to it. We're the same way as lots here...we've been married a long time and we don't do big gifts ever...if we want something we go buy it, but I will sneak him a love note into his briefcase with some 'ideas' for later in the evening.

ours will be frugal too but mostly because DH's birthday and our anniversaries are also in feb so it's already been a less frugal than usual month for us... probably homemade dinner, then we will pop in a movie and relax together....

I bought him a 20 dollar pair of binoculars to take geo caching and he got me a couple kits to make basket that he knew I wanted (app 10.00). VD is a Wednesday so we will be at church as usual. Not very romantic but typical for us. I do have something for him to open that day, A $! pair of hand warmers. Last week he was so cold he couldn't use the pen when he found the cache. Both on diets so no candy, flowers wilt, (although I saw some incredible wooden ones the other day) and we are trying to save anyway. I got our youngest a cell phone case at the dollar store for his toy phone since he keeps begging for mine.

Well, weather permitting,MIL is watching DS tomorrow a.m. so I can work during the day and meet with a vendor. If that happens, DH and I will go out for lunch using a GC we got for Christmas. Otherwise, we will not be doing anything special.

I'll be spending Valentine's evening going to my fitness class at the local community college. -- But I'll also be calling my mom, dad and brother to wish them a Happy VD. No money spent (well, using a few cell phone minutes for call to Dad since he's not on Cingular).

while going through my digital photos i found one of me and DH that is the best ever taken of us. granted, there are only about 5 total, but this one is really good
so i cropped it in, fixed up the color levels, and at lunch i'm going to CVS to get a copy printed out for each of us. VD done for 30 cents plus tax. |

I am giving some money to a little teen girl that works at the restaurant. She works so hard, goes to high school and has no parents.
