How creative!
My grandmother once showed me a secret hiding place in their basement, behind a loose cinder block. Sadly, when my grandfather died and they sold the house, i never learned if anyone retrieved the money. My mother doesn't know, either. As i understand, the house was since razed by new owners and a new one built on the premises.

Can't believe that anybody hasn't said, "Take it to the Bank". I have a 800/lb. safe in my garage that I got free from an old boss that didn't want it anymore. Keep a bunch of old coins, titles to cars, insurance documents in it. Holding part of the safe is only about the size of a 2 gallon jug. I have around 900 record albums, so if I was to hide cash, it would probably be in one of those. Years ago, the neighborhood went through a bunch of thefts (mostly garage type break-ins), and I bought chains and padlocks and secured everything down. Now I'm getting older and so is my stuff, so I don't lock up a lot of stuff like I used to--I figure if somebody needs it that bad, they might as well take it, cause all my stuff is so old, it will only cause the thief more grief.

We have one of those monster big old Oxford English dictionaries. For a while I ahd a bit tucked away under "M" for money. That was so I could remember what the heck I did with it.
I think the burglars who stopped to have a meal visted my place when I was a child. We had a burglar who took a shower, used up the shampoo (a lot!), picked some wildflowers from our field and left them in a jar on our dining table. Stole my only nice blouse and a radio. I figure it was someone desperately dirty who wanted to re-join clean society...with musical accompaniment, I guess. |

I always told my husband (prekids) onelookinour house, and run away! with computers in variousstates of build and piles of stuff, everywhere...no one could find anything useful...including us! Now that the house has rugrats, it is much neater, aside from the kids toys.......all the stuff is in boxes...and Ifigure if I had money to hide, I would store it in one of them...in fact I might, and then tell my husband and see how long it took him to empty theboxes to find it! |

some neighbors of mine were robbed it showed their house on the news it was so unbelievably clutter I can not see how the thieves found anything worth stealing and how the owners could tell what was gone.
My house is so clutter free I do not think they would find much of interest a computer and a TV maybe and like another poster pointed out my stuffs getting old so they would be nuts to take it LOL My son gave me a little Dr pepper can that the lids screws off of to reveal a hiding spot,I do not use it as he gave it to me at Christmas with a house full of people. I usually keep some cash in the kitchen in a coffee can which I figure is the first place a thief would look for it. I am afraid to get too creative with hiding it or I will forget what I did with it |

Excellent article!
It mostly jives with what I've already known, but it also shed certain details that I had not known before. |

My problem with hiding places like fake shaving cream cans, tampon boxes, crusty underwear, etc. is the risk of someone unwittingly throwing away the container is probably a lot higher than the risk of a thief actually breaking into your house searching for cash.

have you all watched the show "it takes a theif " I love that show and it has tought me a lot
especially the don't bother havoing a safe if you do not bolt it to the floor or lock it,as it is a handy to go box for theifs ;-) I have been wanting my Dh to install a key box so the theives cannot drive our vehicles away so easy but Dh resists as he is not sure what we would do with the key to the key box ;-) |

The only thing I would say about it is the bravado that ex-burglar is displaying. He's right to some extent. They can and will turn a house inside out, because they know that the longer they work it, the more they are likely to find.
However, regardless of bravado, it really depends on how much time they think they have, don't they? If they think they'll get caught anytime soon, they probably won't have time to tear your house apart, even if they want to. However, if they think they've got all night.... ![]() Earlier, I've made a response on where I really hide my money, but... then decided to delete it. However, I'll just briefly summarize that I personally don't have it anywhere I have mentioned thus far, and that simple burglary won't be enough. That and my primary concern is losing my small weaponry collection instead of my cash.An alternative that hasn't been mentioned yet is to hide it somewhere in your vehicle. However, that's not so much security as it is convenience, since it's likely that you can be out and about when your find yourself in an immediate emergency situation, or if an imminent emergency should arise, you'll be piling into the car anyways. Either way, this tactic has been long known by gun folks a la the trunk rifle concept. This works best if you have a garage, but it's something that's worth considering I think.Last but not least, I want to emphasize something that he slyly remarked in the beginning of the article. The easiest way to solve a lot of this issue is to simply have a bank deposit box. |
