Default TV Producer Looking To Interview Someone On New IRS Savings Option

I had a TV producer contact me the looking to interview people that will be taking advantage of the new IRS direct deposit options. Here is what she wrote:

Hi! I'm Pam Wheaton Shorr, and I produce consumer reports for local television stations around the country. I am in the middle of doing a story on the new IRS option that allows people to split their tax refunds and deposit into different accounts. The IRS feels this is a good new option to help people save more for their retirement.

I am looking for a consumer who is willing to talk with me on camera about how this new option might help them save more of their refund. Ideally, this person would be someone who already ends up splitting up their refund after it arrives and who'd like the IRS to do the work for them, or someone who thinks the new option would be a better way to make sure that they sock away part of their return in savings or an IRA, etc. We shoot all over the country, so if you are interested and would like to get in touch, I would really appreciate it! Thanks for your help. Pam pwshorr@comcast.net

It seems like a frivolous feature to me. How much effort is it to get your refund deposited to savings and then transfer funds to other accounts you have. I'm curious how much of our tax dollars are going to implement, support and advertise this feature.

Also this feature might encourage people to withhold more and get bigger tax refunds, when they should be contributing to things like their Roth IRA as soon as possible instead of giving the Treasury an interest free loan.

I am inclined to agree if they are using our tax dollars to do this.

Since the IRS has introduced direct deposit I have utilized this and split the funds, but I am not sure if I would want to be interviewed about it. This has been going on for a while...I wonder what the hoop la is all about

The CPA community does not intend to really inform our clients about this. If they ask we will of course do as they wish, but overall it is a PITA!!!! We are not going to advertise the new option in the least. I think it is our stand against more paperwork and wasted tax dollars.

How ridiculous is it the idea that people would save only if it went directly to their account. I know I know, it is not ridiculous at all in this day in age. & yet it is so completely ridiculous.

Again, just one more way for more and more faceless people to have our account information that I'm just not willing to divulge.

Let us exercise a bit of common sense caution if we can folks. How hard is it to wait a few days to deposit it for ourselves where we deem appropriate?

I for one am willing to forfeit a day or two of interest.

It feels very Orwellian to me to think that I have to have big brother to hold my hand on the way to getting our money to our bank in a timely manner...it feels very much like one step closer to never actually having any money in my hand that "Unc" doesn't know about down to the smallest penny!

Paranoid?

Maybe. But, I prefer to think of it as cautious.
