Default charities

ok part of my new position at work includes a nonprofit referral program. It's an aspect I'd like to grow my company in.

My question is this...... I need some help thinking of nonprofits that are not controversial (ie not Planned Parenthood). I also want to stay away from churches because I don't want to touch religion with a 10 foot pole (in a business sense). So far the only ones I have are a few animal shelters that I spoke with at a cat show.

Can anyone here help me brainstorm?

How about health organizations -- Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, March of Dimes, etc.

Also Red Cross, food banks, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Junior Achievement, etc.

I think that some charities are controversial no matter what side of the fence you are on. Such charities include Planned Parenthood and PETA (they're the first that come to mind). In fact from a company's point of view, you might lose a customer if the company makes a donation to either charity (particularly PP)

Joan I probably worded the sentence wrong. Last year the nonprofit program was new. In the whole district (a county and a half) only one organization was signed up (a hospital). With those numbers, it's an growth area that I can take advantage of. I'm in an experimental position right now, and it's one of the best opportunities (career wise) that I've had in my lifetime. I know that this is an area that I can excel in.

Are you wanting nonprofits as clients? I don't understand the need for suggestions, so I don't know what to suggest. If you just need a list of nonprofits in your area, you could start with the members of Untied Way if they are in your area.

the program is not the nonprofits themselves as clients, but we give flyers for the nonprofit to distruibute to customers/employees/volunteers, etc and if the customer comes in with the flyer, the nonprofit gets $25
