Default Aflac

Starting in January my employer will be offering optional Aflac insurance. Has anyone had experience with them?

No, but the commercials are pretty clever.

The commercials are hysterical, but I think this is usually more geared to people who chose not to have an EF. The commercials always show it paying for gas, and house payments, etc...which I guess I always thought was the purpose of an EF. Do you have any idea how much coverage you would get and how much you'd have to pay?

It does seem to be for people who do not have an EF. Coverage varies drastically based on the type of incident ($35 - $12,000 for broken teeth, bones, surgeries, etc...$200 if you need an MRI, CT scan or an ambulance ride). To cover DH and I, the cost will be between $6 and $10/month (pre tax). Any payments received are non taxable.

We have this at work and I have had it for years. I got it at first because I didn't have any extra money, but since it basically pays for it's self I keep it. The accident policy had a yearly 'preventative maintence' thing, eye exam, physical, pap etc. and if you do it yearly (which you should anyway) and you send in the paper they send you $60. So you pay even less for it! I cut my hand with a knife, 2 stitiches and an ER trip, covered complete by my health insurance. I got $60 from AFLAC. I've only had one really bad snowmobile accident and it was pre-AFLAC. If I had AFLAC I would have received about 3K, bummer. I also have a disability policy with them for 2 reason. I don't have a second income (SO) so if I were injured I wanted a way to pay the mortgage and 2.) it works for pregnancies as long as you have had the policy for a minimum amount of time. So when I do marry it will pay my out of pocket expenses for the pregancy (at least the six weeks, more if I get on bed rest or have to have a c-section). For me the cost was so little it's worth it. If you are accident prone, I think you could make money on it. At a minimum it should cover most if not all of your out of pocket expenses for co-pays and deductibles for accidents. To me it's worth it.

Oh as a side note. My boss mother in law had a cancer policy. When she was diagnosed for cancer they sent her a check for 10K! It paid for her drugs not covered by her insurance and she was able to pre-pay all of her final expenses. I know it helped their family out a lot.
