I think someone needs to start a "My Precious" thread. I'm doing my best Smeagol impression right now -- unfortunately you can't hear me.

I know a few friends of mine that needs to read this. One in particular is going through a real tough time, but as a result, he's also buying a whole bunch of stuff to try to "self-medicate".

Interesting and yet frightening at the same time.

Sweeps, you are by far one of my faves, but I have to tell you, I hate seeing "Resident PITA" attached to your name. Instead of seeing the happy pig I see a cutesy acronym. I didn't peg you for cutesy.

I agree that immersing yourself in work or projects does result in satisfaction.

The problem with surrounding yourself with people to be happy is that ultimately most people will hurt and disappoint you. Yes, I know that it is pessimistic, but it is very true. Someone you consider a friend will stab you in the back. Family members will turn their back on you, and it may be the precious child that you loved and nutured for 18 years that does it (just ask my mom about my brother). You are considered one of the lucky few if you have a marriage that lasts.

While I don't advocate a life avoiding others, you just have to be very, very careful who you trust to be a part of your life.

I found it interesting that the article said we all have a set point for happiness. I think that is true. I also agree with what bchgrl said. People will hurt you and stab you in the back. My adopted daughter did that to me many time. I had to learn to just go on and be a happy person in spite of my problems.
The only real "stuff" I need is my dh and my sweet puppy!
