Default Oil Is Cheaper Than Coca Cola

The oil execs say we should stop complaining because oil is less than coca cola

http://money.cnn.com/2006/10/07/news...reut/index.htm

Of course, we don't need to drink 20 gallons of coca cola to keep our income - at least most of us. On the other hand, if the higher prices don't get people to reduce their consumption, there really is no reason for oil companies to try and lower the cost. Are we a nation that just complains and doesn't take any action?

Back during the oil embargo we did just that. Everybody got tired of waiting in long lines and trying to find gas. So we didn't drive. Eventually, there was a glut of gas. I, too, haven't figured out why we aren't staying at home. I guess it is because it is expensive, but not scarce. Here, before and after hurricane rita, it got more scarce. I didn't drive cos I didn't know if I could get more very easily. Also, we can choose not to drink coke. I guess gas is needed more and people have to drive to work. But for me, I don't drive near as much cos I don't really need to drive.

Get out the bicycles and let them keep the gas. Drive only when necessary!

This is an asinine comparison. I don't need a coke to drive my butt to school every day. Besides that, soda products have actual competition. What competition to oil companies have? Bikes? I live in a northern rural community. Riding my bike 10 miles into town in December ain't an option.

Geojen, the comment was made tongue in cheek. There are ways to cut down oil and gas use. Carpooling, public transport, and while not viable in your case, riding a bicycle.

it depends upon which continent you are in...In a country like Iraq, water is not easily and readily available, and Oil> oh you just have to dig a little and kaphew! therefore in this country, water is more precious than oil and thus more expensive..=0

I wonder if I could drive my car on cola.

If I purchased the 3 liter store brand cola for 99¢, that would be cheaper then the $2.29 gas down the street.

FYI: 1 US gallon = 3.7854118 liter

Who cares what oil execs say. They don't set the price. The price is set on the world market as willing buyers & sellers agree. I would disagree with your statement that "higher prices don't cause people to lower their consumption". Look what is happening to oil & gasoline prices. There is excess supply & the price is going down.

I think higher gas prices cause some people with tight budgets to cut back in other areas first. Maybe they'll buy more store brand groceries. Maybe they'll skip the nail salon this week. Maybe they'll cook a couple more meals at home instead of picking up fast food on the way home. Maybe they won't send any extra money to the credit card this month. Ultimately, once they've cut everywhere they feel they can cut, only then will they start cutting back on driving. Americans are spoiled. They don't want to walk anywhere or take a bike ride. They want to hop in their car and go. It would take a lot more than mildly higher prices to change that. JMHO.

When I lived in Flat Florida, I rode my bike to town a lot, I also walked to town a lot. Now, in the mountains, that is kind of hard. (and dangerous cause there are no back roads to get to town, only the highway)

In Pa this weekend we went to my husbands childhood curch, a 5 minute walk...they wanted us to drive! It would take longer to buckle the kids in than the drive! (yes they drove, we walked-ok the 11 month old rode..in my arms)

Well, Coca Cola tastes much better than oil. As such, it is fitting that it is more expensive
