I just splurged on a heated bed for my dog and I hate it. But I keep the house so cold, to save on high heating bills. She used to sleep with us, but we sleep better without her, so she is in the pantry now.She is so tiny, I want her to stay warm. I will just cut out something else to pay for it.

I can understand that. I don't care how much money my husband spends on the tools he needs, but I will keep wearing holey old clothes!

When we eat out, I usually get the cheapest thing on the menu. I just hate to waste the money.

This is the hardest thing for me to splurge on nice dinners out!! You eat it and it's gone, at least if you buy a thing you have something to show for it but dinners, nothing, except memories of a good meal I guess. :

Our dad died when I was 11 and my sister was 13. My mom worked as a self-employed seamstress and provided the best she could on what she earned from her customers. We were never on welfare. Though we struggled and had only the basics, we learned to make due with what we had. We couldn't splurge because our budget was so tight. I still find it hard today to splurge even though things are much better for me now.

It is funny but the last three items I ordered, I have sent back. I just got my heated dog bed and it does not seem nearly warm enough. For the price of $60, I am sending it back. I will just let her sleep on a heating pad like I did last winter.

I notice a old patern in my past with my family, and my last marriage. It seems I sacraficed so much from myself to give more to the ex husband or my mom. They just took so much from me without any care in each other's "best interest" except for their own. This was long hard lesson I had to learn and pay for!

Now I learn to take care of myself since most likely another person is not going take care of me in a way that I need. I save much as I can and not buy expensive stuff and keep reusing the stuff I have. I just now say NO to others as they can learn to budget for what they need that is outside of the "needs" and "gifts on special occasion". Also it makes a difference to not marry the wrong person. Make sure you marry someone that has both of you together in the best interest of each other and I belive the sacrafice from each other in different areas will balance itself out. Ima is a role model for me in marriage.

wanted to bump this up b/c i think it's important.

i'm confused by folks willing to splurge on others but not themselves. splurging occasionally on others shows you care. splurging occasionally on others and refusing to do so for yourself implies you care more for the other peope than you do for yourself, or at the very least they are more deserving somehow.

ummmm.... no.

i find little splurges that are built in to my budget make it much easier for me to enjoy my life. if i'm enjoying life on my budget, i'm that much more likely to stick to it!
  1. good cofee. i can drink most anything and it'll do, but i enjoy a cup of really good coffee so much more, makes me start my day with a smile not a grunt!
  2. chocolate. nuff said
  3. buying good cust of meat rather than tough ones. same nutrional value but a much more enjoyable eating experience
  4. the shampoo or soap i want (yes, fair trade organic good for you stuff) rather than what's least expensive. it lasts me forever anyways, so my cost per day ain't that high, and i feel better about what i'm using on my skin and the companies i'm supporting with my dollars.

tinabeana - That is a good point you came across on

I will be honest to say I am guilty of giving more towards others and not put myself on the same level of care on my self. Overtime I started to become resentful of the others since my personal accomplishment did not fully happen in the amount of timeframe I have hoped(my own stupid fault and not theirs!). I am finally breaking that repeating pattern I have had for many years. I do notice with my own eyes that a lot of people I know are unconsciously willing to adjust their life to whoever they are with.

"Those who receive not, asked not" is a phrase that often describes myself. I now have a whole lot of asking to do and I am not going to feel guilty about it but at the same time I would like to treat others how I would treat myself and not treat myself less but still on a frugal nature for everyone and in fairness. The relationship is different among spouses, family and good friends so fairness is interpreted differently among those.

Well, as a guy, I am lucky in that I can come across as a money-grubbing jerk and ... somehow that will seem to fly.

Seriously though, while I do splurge on others when it's appropriate, I try my very best to keep things all well within my budget. And yes, sometimes, it means that I have to say "no".

I just realized that I wrote incorrectly earlier. The more I seriously want to splurge on something, the more I will agonize over it. In fact, my ex used to joke about how I look like I am about to bust a vein when I am about to spend money.
