Default Rumor: Wal-mart Getting rid of Lay-a-Way!

Anyone hear this?

Anyone know if it's true?

Folks on another board I read are saying that they are getting rid of this after the Christmas holiday! I love this feature especially around holidays & b-days as it's a great place to hide stuff from snoopy hubby's & kids + then I can buy more cause I know I've already got this & that & I've got it for 2 mo's there interest free rather than putting it on a credit card to get right away.

I have been doing layaways for about 40 years. Not any more, but it was great to put up toys for kids and grandkids, and buy them in the summer time. That gave me 4 months to pay on things!

Oh dear, I hope not. That's the way many people paid for their children's Christmas when that had no other alternative. It is a convenience and a good way to keep your kids from getting into their presents early.

More than anything I think it's costing them SPACE. Not to mention I bet fewer and fewer people are using it thanks to the brainwashing society has done and the easy credit that is out there. If enough people everywere where using it and raising a fuss they would not get rid of it. The reason they are getting rid of it would have to be because the market is allowing them too.

I used Lay-a-way all the time in high school for my back to school clothes. I would pick it all out then pay if off over the summer to get it for school...worked great for me. Plus if the item you had in lay-a-way went on sale..you could return it for the price you paid then rebuy it at the sale price! A great way to make sure you were getting the best deal.

I spoke with a gal I work with at school who also works at Wal-Mart. She said there has been nothing said about getting rid of Lay-a-way at the Wal-Mart stores.

From what I can gather doing a quick search it is only going to happen at some stores.

OK, my friend had a meeting at Wal-Mart this week. They are getting rid of layaway during the first part of December at least in area stores.

I think this would be very sad. My aunt was telling me that she loves using this service - and I think it's a worthwhile service for Walmart to keep around!

No longer a rumor, I'm afraid. Here's the rest of the story.

I read the article in the paper. They are getting rid of it because very few people use it anymore and it is costing them a ton of money to maintain the layaway department for a handful of customers. The department usually has 3 employees so about 10,000 workers could be affected by the change.

The article also said that layaway is used mainly by the poorest customers who don't have and may not qualify for credit. But Wal-Mart is hoping some of those people will get in-house credit cards, which, of course, would generate more income for the company.

That sucks@! I used the layaway just a few months ago. And the Wal-mart card. Half of the people who go there probably cannot get the card. I know I couldn't oh well.
