Default Don't Understand My BF

Here is my problem: My best friend lives in Phoenix, and I currently live in East Lansing, MI. She has been bugging and bugging me to get out to visit her. The problem is, my DH and I have solomnly agreed to not go into debt on our credit cards for any reason, other than some type of unforseeable mishap that our safety net savings couldn't handle. So, right now, probably until late next spring, it just isn't in the budget for me to go see her. She doesn't understand this. She uses her credit cards for everything, and carries a huge debt. She has the attitude that , oh, when I graduate I will have a job and can pay everything back. So, how do I explain to her that it is not that I don't want to see her, its that I refuse to go into debt to do it?

I think your post said it perfectly. Just be honest. A BF will understand. Then, start saving so that you can go see her when you have enough.

If she still doesnt understand, invite her to come and see you....then the ball is in her court.

My best friend and I also have different attitudes on money. I think you just need to be honest.

As you save for the trip, keep her up to date on the balance. Then she'll know you are making it a priority to see her...but with CASH!!

Ray had a good idea, invite her to see you! Tell her the truth, that you can't afford it right now!

Starting up a savings fund and telling my BF about it is a great idea. Thanks for much! I feel better now, must be the "action" plan!

My best friend is terrible with money. Even though he has maxed out credit cards, he still managed to scrounge up enough on one of them to buy himself a large plasma TV.

I mean, he's great with everything else, just not with money. Since he's still busy with his family and schooling, I will have to be the one who visits him. I'm OK with that.

I'm late adding to this thread, but I think being honest is a good idea as is inviting her to come see you. Even the saving and telling your BF your progress. Perhaps you both could meet halfway inbetween after you've saved the money that way you wouldn't need quite as much.
