Please print the article instead of links. Many links don't allow you to read the article unless you register and I am not interested in doing that.
I agree with the rest. The situation is what made it offensive. And, the company should take it's own advice on saving money.
As for any degrading money savings, I would say Dumpster Diving would not be on my list. I would think this would be illegal and dangerous as well. And, I don't pull things out of other's trash. If they don't want it, I doubt it is something I would want either. I am trying to declutter my own home so I don't bring in anymore stuff.

You are correct that trash picking and dumpster diving are illegal in some towns so be aware of local law before doing this.

As for your statement about, "if they don't want it, I doubt it is something I would want either," you may be mistaken there. People throw out all kinds of stuff, not just things that are broken or damaged or worn out. Many people will put things out to the curb just because they are tired of them or they decided to redecorate. The items might be in perfect condition. I've even seen people throw out brand new items presumably because they didn't need them and were too lazy to return them.

Go to any college campus at the end of the school year. You will find thousands of dollars worth of furnishings that students leave behind because they simply don't need them, can't transport them home for the summer and don't want to pay to store them.

Many businesses will toss out great equipment because they decide to upgrade. I've gotten perfectly good computer monitors out of the trash because the business went to flat panel monitors and discarded their CRT monitors.

Drive around most any decent neighborhood on trash day and you may be surprised by what you find at the curb.

Like everyone else, the context is what makes this whole thing degrading. Suggestions like "Iron your own shirts" and "Make your own coffee" seem to imply that these people have been living extravagant lifestyles, with maids to do these basic tasks for them, instead of living just like regular joes who know how to plug in an iron by themselves.
