I have a tendency to that...let me give you a couple of examples:
When I go to Parties, Potlucks, etc...I make sure I fill my plate....regardless of whether or not I finish it all...I have to have it all and enough of each item....(the guilt factor comes after ) Reward Cards....I have a Subway Card with over 200 Points on it, I could easily have a 4 Family Meal out of it but I REFUSE to Spend it....I will not touch it....even if I have no money I will still scrape together some cash so I can get a Subway Sandwich and put even MORE Points on my Card LOL! I am also a Member of MyPoints and I almost have enough for a $50 Gift Card ANYWHERE I want on the website....but I refuse to cash out, in fact I just wait for the daily emails to accumulate MORE Points...I was thinking of cashing out at $100 but I really do not want to do that.... Edit to Add: What made me think of the Topic was...I have Points on this Forum to go to the Store and make my name all Glittery and such but I just won't do it LOL. Anyway, thanks for letting me share! Jacquelyn |

I used to be a horder but I am now recovering!

I was thinking you were asking about having a bunch of stuff on the shelf- because I do that! My husband probably has 6 sweatshirts waiting in the wings (but at $5 for a quality shirt, they can wait). I probably have 6 big photo albums ahead but i just shot 600 photos on vacation so they will be used, I have two sets of sandals for each of us waiting, I am still using computer paper that I bought 10 years ago, I buy clothes, art supplies, and toys for the Christmas kid- what I don't use this year will lap over to next year, and there are several food items like brown rice and cereal which I can no longer buy. lynclarke |

I am kind of a neat freak, so no, I don't. In fact, I have the opposite tendency of wanting to throw things out, even if it still seems semi-useful.

No, I don't. I tend to have a big supply of toilet paper. That comes from Y2K. I knew a lot of people were hoarding things. I figured If I hoarded toilet paper, I could always trade for things. I got all my tp on sale, at about 25 cents a roll. (It is the good stuff too)

With some things, yes.
It's weird, I have to fight the tendency to not use something, so I can have it later, to again not use it. For example: I should save that great jar of olive tapendade for something special....well it's a year and a half later, why the heck can't I treat us to olive tapenade?!? At least it doesn't take up that much space. Now I have a glut of photo paper due to a great garage sale deal, and it's still hard for me to freely use it. I have made a lot of progress, though. I have stopped hoarding things I won't use - like the three coffee cans of pens and pencils. Now I'm just stuck hoarding what I think is "special." |

I just looked in my pantry, I have all kinds of boxed things that are 3 years old or older! I hate to throw these things away!

I used to hoard for the special occassion, but now I try to use it and enjoy it, too manythings have spoiled or been ruined waiting for tht 'special day'...if you must make it fncy, create a reason!

Omigod, I forgot about the underwear in the "new" drawer. You are right. I bet I have 10 or 12 pairs. I am getting ready to toss a couple of pair. We went to Italy this summer and took old underwear in case we had to offload some clothes to make room for souvenirs. We did!! I also left 2 pair of scrubs (they work as jammies, swimsuit covers, and I want to wash everything at a laundrimat outfit), one slacks+shirt of my husbands, shower flipflops, and a few toiletries. Total out of pocket expense $20!! I had picked up clearance items with the trip in mind.

I do to an extent my dh would say I am a bad horder but I dont know I stockpile things I get for free & I have save the girls clothes for the next one & since they are spread out a little 9yrs between the oldest & youngest it can sit in boxes for awhile but I guarantee its saving us money my youngest 2yrs old wore my oldest dd's shoes & used tons of stuff from my second dd who is almost 6 so yes I guess I do hoard

Food -- and that goes back to a time in early childhood when I went hungry.
I keep a larder that's consistently overstocked. And I'm not that interested in eating. I just want to know that I have a couple of months supply on hand -- just in case. |

I do not buy any non-food items unless they are 75% off (new year resolution).
Everytime I see something 75% off I clean them out. Even though the prices would probably be similar to the cheapest stuff with coupons, the quality I can get from clearance sales is much better. |

I've hoarded some things, like pricey food or condiments. I tend to collect buy 10, get one free cards and some gift cards, but I've been making an effort to either use them right away or save them for the end of a paycheck to use in place of cash. Those Subway cards would be perfect for lunches at the end of the month; put your lunch money that you would have spent in the bank.
My mom hoarded, so I know that I have a tendancy to hoard. After spending a lot of time picking at stacks and stacks of junk when mom and dad died, I try to toss items out when they are unusable, or when I know that those items come into the house on a regular basis - newspaper, rubber bands, twist ties, plastic bags. Clean bare space is important to me. ![]() |

Hmm. I may have misunderstood the question.
I thought the question dealt with clutter. I don't like clutter. However, when it comes to stockpiling essential items that are on sale, that's a different story. So long as they are neatly stacked and put away, I don't mind hoarding either. ![]() |

Stockpiling things with an eye towards potential needs in the future is one thing. Accumulating and/or hanging on to things for no legitimate reason is just foolishness. I have a friend with what I call 'pack-rat' syndrome. He keeps everything. His house, attic, storage sheds (yes, plural) are all full. If his wife tries to have a garage sale or to toss anything he is opposed to the idea in nearly every instance. If you hang on to rewards points that could benefit you, and you aren't hanging on to them in order to save up for some specific future benefit, I think you have to regard that as problem behavior. I don't mean this to be insulting, just addressing what may be a factual problem. If you take food you don't need just because, and save things compulsively that you know you don't need to save etc. you may need to speak to a personal counselor. |

I'm totally the opposite of hoarding things at this point. I do have a pantry and freezer, that are both stocked, but it is a rotating sort of affair. I don't put in more than I'm using...but I hate to shop and refuse to most of the time, so I'm not defining either area as hoarding.
My moms house (which will eventually be my responsibility to clear out) is a mass of stuff. Inside, outside, in the garage, all over. She jokes that I'll have my work cut out for me. Everytime I'm at her place, I try to toss things in the trash can..... Seeing her place is all the push I need to keep mine clear of any surplus stuff. |
