Default No Games At Recess

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen! You can't play tag at recess because it's too dangerous? What do they want to do, place all the kids in bubbles? I'm in shock

schools ban games at recess

I don't know for sure, but I bet the true motivation is to avoid getting sued. There's a lower chance of a school being sued because Buffy is overweight or not socially well developed than because Buffy got hurt playing at school.

BTW, you'd be amazed how much chemistry can be taught with the chemical equivalents of sugar and salt.

Yes, many schools want to eliminate phys ed and recess. As the mother of boys, I think this is completely absurd and wholeheartedly support phys ed programs. I do believe ALL the kids would have less behavioral problems in school if they were given an 45 min - an hour a day after lunch to run, jump, and play. I think all the kids should be taken outside for this time no matter what the weather (unless it is pouring rain or other parents object). In that case, they should be taken to the gym to play dodgeball or whatever else. I would hope other parents support this as well.

My first thought was to hop in with "oh come on, tag has been played for generations and I surely never got hurt playing it..."

And then I thought....and no one ever brought a gun or knives to my school, and we didnt have gangs, and the principal could whack my hiney if I got out of line, and we had to wear dresses....etc, etc...

It is a different age indeed.

Nowadays, the wrong glance or wearing the wrong color can get you killed...

But tag??? Its like apple pie and baseball..... sigh...pretty sad.

Does anyone remember when common sense was a bit more common? No playing tag? Unbelieveable!

I dont think it is the west coast (at least entirely) Oregon is still fairly redneck and tag is still allowed...

then again, so is driving around in your pickup with a shotgun.

What educators? Oh, you mean the people that pass on information from inacurate books. Ah.. nevermind. I answered my own question there.

The real problem is much bigger.

And the total ban on peanut butter sandwiches because some kids are allergic to peanuts -- what's up with that?

The article talks about 7 or so schools that instituted bans (or "similar actions" as the article puts it) on certain recess activities. This is out of what, tens of thousands of schools nationwide? We don't even know if these were public schools or private/parochial schools. This is just some red meat for the anti-public school crowd.

Kids need that energy release and breathe of fresh air. I can not believe they would do a thing like this.

If we want 'red meat' there is plenty on the cow known as 'public school'.

While I do not condem public school based on one example (or 7), I have looked at the model of mass education and age based education as a whole. (not to mention government instututions). The whole big picture is much bleaker than canceling a recess here and there.

We have the luxury of viewing public schools with a microscope and critiquing every problem, big and small. We don't get that luxury with private schools and especially with homeschoolers.

Personally, I think the public schools are a "scapegoat" for just about everything. There are alot of very good public schools. And, there are alot of very good teachers who are doing the best they can. There is good and bad to everything. I think public school has been a great success. OK, send the flames my way!

I tend to agree that some public schools are great! I personally am aware that I am not talented enough to teach my child at home so I rely on public school! But some are not so good either but I think that is the case in all areas!
