I recently began shopping at Save-a-lot as they are much closer than Aldi's. They seem to carry a lot of the same products (I'm pretty sure the same makers with different labels) at the same prices as Aldi's. They also seem to carry a few more brand name items that Aldi's and have more meats (does Aldi's even have fresh meats?), more produce, and more frozen food. I did not know they accept coupons. They do take credit cards (can use my cash-back card), whereas no Aldi's that I know of accepts CC.

My store also carries a few products peculiar to my city---peculiar to my neighborhood in fact. So I can get the local bakery goods and the ethnic food of the neighborhood. Also, there is a quarter of an aisle of Mexican items.

my savealot accepts debit cards, cash..... no cc's at this time. you are right, i think aldi's does not carry fresh meat..i don't know if they are the same prices as aldi's, as i do not shop there...but, they are pretty good.. cheaper than dollar general on alot of items too..i did view the mexican aisle briefly.. has anyone done a pricebook for savealot??? i would be interested....
lets begin one:
bananas were $0.48/lb.
cake ice cream cones $1.29 for 24 ct.. nice and fresh too. can be frozen for freshness.
chocolate 1/2 gal. ice cream $1.99 delicious and fresh
milk 2% gallon $2.49
9 roma tomatoes $0.75
4 green peppers $0.65
2 large sweet onions $0.59
i bought the tomatoes, peppers, onions at 10 am, up front next to the registers...

In my area both Aldis and Sav-a-lot operate and Aldis for most items are about 5-10% cheaper. Sav-a-lot however has a little more selection though.

I havent bought meat from a Save-a-lot yet.

I bought pork chops that were cheaper at Walmart once and almost burned myself when I breaded and fried them. They were saturated in water (to charge me more) and you know what happens when hot oil meets water!

Ive been scared to shop anywhere except for Publix for meats since.

Can that be done without making the meat look weird? Saturating them in water, I mean. I know that ground meats might have ice granules mixed into it, but plain cuts? Seems like they'd turn kind of white if they were soaked in water. Yuck. Shame on any business doing such things!

It was a year or two ago so Im not sure.

After I stopped cursing (haha) I double checked to make sure I hadnt overheated the oil. It was fine and the pork chops had shrank in the process.

I had always heard of the practice but never saw it in action!

You have great deals there, but the one that is not to far from me is not the cleanness so I do not shop there at all

Our Aldi is much nicer and much closer to my home.

I had a problem with Walmart meat too, it felt soggy .

Our Aldi has fresh meat, but I don't buy it. I did'nt find anything really good at my Save-a-Lot and it wasn't as nice as Aldi. I should try it again as it was a couple of years ago, maybe it has changed.

My SaveALot smells weird, so I've never bought meat/milk/bread there. I do find some good deals on frozen/canned.

We have a Save a lot near us but not the best area so I rarely go there. I only buy canned/boxed items there.

We had hamburgers once from there and they were nasty. No more meat from there.

Arrow Re: do you shop at savealot?

I've never been to a sav-a-lot that didn't take coupons! - and I've moved a lot, so I've seen quite a few.

I usually do my grocery shopping once a week... and I always start at sav-a-lot. Buy as much as you can there, then head over to Kroger (or where ever) for the rest of the stuff you can't find. There are a few generics that I don't care for, but it's trial and error... and at those prices you can afford a few mistakes. I buy more canned juice there than anywhere, because they actually sell a wide variety of 100% natural products - a rarity on most juice shelves.

Now, about the meat: I never never never buy ANY produce from Wal-mart! Everything they sell is overly soaked in preservatives so that it lasts longer, to look fresher on the shelves. But the taste is sacrificed; personally I find it disgusting (not just the thought, but the actual taste). I know I should buy everything organic if I want real natural taste, but I have never tasted any produce from anywhere (other than Wally world) with so many additives that no amount of spice can ever hope to cover it up.

Sav-a-lot, however, I have had some incredible luck. It's like anywhere, you have to be very selective. Once, I bought a pack of pork chops from them... usually pork chops shrivel when you cook them, but not these. I never buy the 'daily special' from sav-a-lot, that meat marked to sell immediately before it expires. But, the normal everyday stuff, is ALWAYS worth looking through.

I am still a big fan of Trader Joe's where good deals can be found. Some things I just go to Albertsons, Ralph's, etc but what I have also discovered is Ranch 99. Ranch 99 is an asian store in California where they litterally have live fish in tanks that can be fileted...
