Re: Doc tips
Head Lice
An All Attacker
Doc Says:
Any child can get lice, even yours. It does not mean that the child is unclean.
Lice in fact are as easy for kids to get as the common cold. There’s potential for lice when children are in a group.
About 10 million cases of head lice occur each year. Three quarters of them are in children under the age of 12.
The first clue that your child may have lice is an itchy scalp. But to see the real evidence, you have to take a close look at the child’s head. While you seldom see the lice themselves, their eggs or nits are easily visible. These grayish white oval eggs attach firmly to the hair shaft.
They’re tiny about the size of a sesame seed, and won’t wash or blow off, as a flake of skin would.
Here are some solutions:
Stay calm. Parents need to stay calm, so they don’t cause a panic with the children.
They have to be reassured that the problem isn’t theirs. Otherwise they’ll think their going to get punished for getting into lice.
Explain to them what lice are, and how you plan on getting rid of them.
Then Head for the Drug Store.
You can banish these invaders with several over the counter products. Rid, A-22, R & C and Nix are all similar products. They come in a shampoo, gel, or liquid.
The instructions on the bottle need to be followed EXPLICITLY. All these products are pesticides.
AVOID BUYING LICE SPRAYS, BECAUSE THEY EXPOSE YOUR CHILD TO TOO MUCH PESTICIDE.
Consider a trim. No not at a barber or hairdresser.. You must do it yourself if it is to be done. But the shorter the hair, the easier it is to deal with.
Wash Hair Over The Sink.
This way you confine treatment to the scalp.
DO NOT USE LICE PRODUCTS IN THE SHOWER, BECAUSE WHEN THE SOLUTION IS RINSED IT CAN CASCADE ALL OVER THE BODY. THE PRODUCTS ARE PESTICIDES, AND NEED IT BE USED WITH CAUTION.
Before you begin remove your child’s shirt , and provide him with a towel to cover his face.
IF THE PRODUCT GETS IN THE EYES , FLUSH IMMEDIATELY AND THOROUGHLY WITH WATER
. Don’t be alarmed if some mild skin irritation and itching results from the killer. HOWEVERDO NOT MISTAKE THEITCHING FOR .
REINFESTATION.
Get Nit Picking
The lice product will kill the lice, but not all the nits. The more nits you can remove , the less likelihood there if of a recurrence in two weeks. Also you will not mistake an old nit for a new one.
For nit removal, use a nit removal comb. There should be one with the product. If the comb is not effective than you can remove the nits with a pair of baby scissors ( with rounded ends) to cut off the hair that has nits attached.
After the delousing treatment , when your child’s hair is dry or only slightly damp, comb it out.
If your child used a towel or bathrobe , pop these items into the hottest water possible.
Do it right away, along with any clothes he was wearing .before treatment.
Then into a hot dryer.
Treat Everyone AT The Same Time.
It only takes one little louse to infest a child. They lay up to ten eggs a day.
The lice can easily spread from one person to another. So to get rid of all critters, you need to examine everyone in the household for signs of lice. Treat all infested.
Clean Up.
One you have detected all the lice and treated the family, you need to pay attention to your house. First gather up everything washable that has come in contact with your child’s head. This means hats, scarves, hooded coats, hair bands, any clothing your child may have worn in the past few days. You need to get your child’s cooperation here.
Don’t forget sheets and pillow cases as well. Wash all items in hot water, and then into the dryer.
What you can’t wash vacuum good, or send it to the cleaners.
Vacuum really good sofas, sofa pillows, mattresses and rugs/carpets.
Then put the vacuum ‘s bag in a plastic bag and into the trash.
Clean all combs and brushes in good hot water. No need to boil.
Take Care Of Teddy
. A teddy bear or stuffed animals need to be vacuumed good, that your child hugs and plays with.. The rest put into a plastic bag, and get them up high. Twist these with twister ties really tight. I recommend giving only one animal if you can get away with it. Now leave that bag up there for two weeks. Lice can not survive off the scalp for more than 24 hours. But it takes the eggs 7 – 10 days to hatch. After this time any lice or nits that may have been on the toys , will be dead.
Any items such as headphones that can not be washed or vacuumed, need the same two week bag treatment. Just keep these bags up high , away from small children.
Check those Heads Daily.
Inspect every child in your house 7 – 10 days after treatment. Adults to if they were treated. If you see any, you need to repeat the treatment. BUT WAIT SEVEN TO TEN DAYS BEFORE THE SECOND TREATMENT.
Good idea to check daily even after the lice have long gone. Then any new recurrences can be vanquished early.
TEACH YOUR CHILD NOT TO SHARE EVERYTHING.
All it takes is one hitchhiker to make it’s way to a comb, brush, or even hat to another child. We all want our children to share their belongings.
BUT CHILREN SHOULD NEVER SHARE COMBS, BRUSHES, HATS, HAIR ACESSORIES, OR HEAD PHONES MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD UNDERSTANDS THIS.
Your child should have an extra comb and brush with him in school.
Then he won’t be so tempted to borrow.

Re: Doc tips
Migraines.
THESE ARE NO PICNIC FOLKS.
Doc Says:
These stinker are worse than a head ache. The headache can make your head spin.
The migraine can make you feel like Linda Blair in the EXORCIST.
Besides head pain they often come with nausea and vomiting.
About 20 minutes before the war between your ears, a migraine can cause flashes of light, blind spots, dazzling zigzag lines, dizziness, and numbness on one side of the body.
You may feel thirsty, crave sweets, feel elated and energetic, or drowsy and depressed.
There’s also hypersensitivity to light and sound.
Heredity plays a role here. Women are twice as likely to suffer than men.
These mega headaches usually start around puberty, and tend to dwindle after age 45.
For some reason, they hardly ever occur during pregnancy.
The exact cause of these kind of headaches is unknown. But evidence suggests that these one sided headaches ( that do not affect the whole skull) have something to do with, the blood vessels in your head.
Triggers also include certain foods, stress, light, and even perfumes or other odors.
Your doc may prescribe ergotamine for these type of headaches.
But this drug can cause distressing symptoms of it’s own.
So Here are some ways that might help:
Sleep It Off.
The best medication is to sleep. Relief comes from falling asleep.
Even if for a short time .But sleeping can trigger other headaches.
So if you’re susceptible to other headaches, the best policy, is to get on a regular sleeping schedule, other than catnaps.
Say No To NutraSweet.
This artificial sweetener isn’t so sweet to migraines. Aspartame sold commercially as NutraSweet, can trigger migraines and make them worse.
You will do much better if you just eliminate this.
Take Time To Relax – LITERALLY
You need to practice some kind of relaxation. Whether it’s exercising, listening to music, or just something to help you unwind. Forget leaving work on a Friday, and hitting the bar. You need to ease into a relaxation, and make it a gradual transition, than just plowing in full force.
Munch On Some Magnesium.
Most migraine suffers may have a shortage of magnesium in their brains. Magnesium is a muscle relaxer, and it can help those with migraines. Sources are dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, and fruits.
Watch What You Eat.
There are some foods that will trigger headaches. We know that 10 – 15 percent of the people with migraines, are plagued by sensitive foods. They can trigger a severe attack. Some of these include chocolate, red wine, and others containing the amino acid Tyramine.
Also foods cooked with MSG. So you be your own judge, only you will know best, what to leave alone. If you get a migraine after consuming any foods, eliminate it from your diet. .
Exercise.
Regular exercise is a wonderful idea for anyone that suffers migraines.
BUT EXERCISE DURING AN ATTACK CAN MAKE IT WORSE.
Don’t Pop The Pill.
If you’re a migraine prone woman who takes birth control pills, you may want to consider discontinuing them. One in every three woman with migraines has increased attacks, when she takes oral contraceptives.
Try Feverfew.
Fevers are fewer after taking this white flowered plant. So are migraine headaches.
You can grow fever few , a common herb, or check your local health food store for supplements or powders. DON’T TAKE FEVERFEW IF PREGNANT.
STOP TAKING FEVERFEW IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY SWOLLEN LIPS, DULLED TASTE BUDS, SORE MOUTH OR TONGUE.
Sorry folks. I hit the button twice when I sent the article on lice.

Re: Doc tips
Constipation Is No Fun.
We’ve all been bombarded with this at one time, or another
Doc Says:
You’ve all been told that you need, to have a good daily movement. This simply isn’t so.
Bowel movements vary. For some three daily movements are normal for them.
Others three times a week are normal for them. Individuals vary.
But are you really constipated, or just think so.
Here are some ways to remedy the situation:
Are You Getting enough fluids.
A constipated individual needs to check out his fluid intake. The menu for battling constipation is fiber and fluids. Lots of both are essential in keeping the stool soft and to help it pass through the colon.
A minimum of six glasses a day, and preferably eight should be a part of every adults diet. Any fluid will do the trick, but the best is water.
Eat That Fiber.
Most American’s don’t get enough fiber in their diet. I recommend a daily consumption of 20 – 35 grams of fiber daily. If constipated you need at least 30 grams.
Fiber comes from complex carbohydrates.
Such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, It isn’t difficult to get 30 grams.
Just choose foods wisely. One half cup of green peas will give you 5 grams.
One small apple will give you 3 grams .A bowl of brand cereal can give you up to 13 grams. But the tops are popcorn, nuts, raisins, pears, figs, prunes, and dried beans.
Word of caution increase fiber slowly, to avoid gas attacks.
Time Out.
Take time an go to the gym. Exercise is good for your heart. But did you also know it’s good for the bowels? Regular exercise will move food through the bowel faster.
Take A Walk With The Baby.
Walking is wonderful for pregnant women. Many experience constipation to accommodate the fetes. So get out and walk a good 20 30 minutes a day. But do take care not to get too winded.
Toilet Training.
Many people need to train themselves, that when mother Nature calls it’s time to defecate. Don’t wait. You’re just setting yourself up for constipation. The best time to go is after a meal. So pick a meal any will do, and sit on the toilet for 10 minutes.
You are conditioning your colon to act as mother nature intended.
Slow down take it Easy.
When your tense or frightened your heart beats faster, and your mouth gets dry.
The bowels stop up as well. Try to relax with some music.
Have A Good Hearty Laugh.
A good belly laugh helps in two ways. It has a massaging effect on the intestines, which help to foster digestion. It also helps with stress.
Therapeutic Humor-- HAVE YOU HEARD ANY GOOD CONSTIPATION JOKES LATELY.
Reconsider Laxative Tablets.
Oh yes they work, but are terribly addictive. Take too many and your bowels get use to them. Then the constipation gets worse.
When should you take laxatives from a bottle – almost never. Natural or vegetable laxatives are the best, whose main ingredient is usually psyllium seed. This type of fiber can be taken over longer periods of time. They must be taken with lots of water.
Get Fast Relief.
If really miserable take a good ole enema, or use a suppository.
Occasional use they are perfectly all right. But if you use them too often, you risk creating a lazy colon.
Use only clear water in enemas. Soaps are too irritating.

Anti-Aging Exercises
Tips for keeping your face looking fresh, and young by strengthening the facial muscles.
Upper Eyes
Place three middle fingers of each hand just under your eyebrows and push up.
At the same time, contract the forehead muscles, so they are pushing down on the fingers. Hold for a count of five for the first set and release. Take a deep breath.
Continue to press, holding to a count of 10 for the next three sets, and breathing.
Do this once a day, six days a week.
Double Chin
Raise the chin until the neck is taught. Press the tongue up on the roof of the mouth, letting the lips part slightly. Hold for a count of five and release. Take a deep breath. Repeat the lift and hold for 10 seconds three more times.
Forehead Lines
Place the fingertips on the forehead at the hairline and push up. Push down on your fingertips with your forehead so that the muscles at the hairline are contracted. Hold for five counts for the first set and 10 counts for the next three sets. After holding, release and take a deep breath between each repetition.

Re: Doc tips
what does it say to do about hyper kids... i took all the sugar away from them and put them into a daily routine, and disciplined them with time out and have them apologize.... they are responding well... their parents do not take time for them... they were starved for attention....no store toys either.. the stuff is still in the trunk of the car... they are doing other things and being creative...

Re: Doc tips
Hyperactivity
Mention that your child won’t sit still, or pay attention and most folks would say, you’ve got a typical red blooded American kid.
Say that Junior can’t seem to and he might be diagnosed, with the most common psychiatric condition of childhood.
We call this Attention Hyperactivity Disorder. With or without the classic busy bee behavior. This affects about two million children in the United States mostly boys.
Scientists are only beginning to learn more about it.
For years popular belief was that that these fidgety, incredible, impulsive kids were just brats, and that of the upbringing or lack of, was likely the cause.
Now we know that is no fault of the parents, but rather the result of an insufficient amount, of one or more of the chemicals in the nervous system.
These are responsible for concentration and attention.
It’s not that these kids are stupid or brats. They know the rules.
They are just so impulsive, they act before they think.
Raising a hyper child is not an easy task. But it doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause either.
The symptoms always appear before age seven, so raising a hyper child is a real challenge. What may seem to be a disability in school, often becomes a gift in adulthood.
These kids often grow up to become adults, who have incredible amounts of energy, very creative, and can often see things different than others.
There are prescriptions that can help with the hyperactivity. Such as Ritalin.
But there are other ways also.
Make Everything Step By Step.
Hyper active kids need an extreme amount of structure and organization.
If they get it they usually settle down, and do better.
To do this I encourage parents to break every activity into six or seven steps.
Whether it is getting out of bed, eating meals, watching t. v, doing homework- virtually every aspect of the child’s life. It’s not enough to say get ready for school.
They need steps. Get out of bed, go and get your teeth brushed, wash your face etc. These children’s attention lapses after a minute or to. So you need to keep at them.
Chart Their Progress.
Make a chart so these kids know what is expected of them. When they fill their obligation, give them points. Then they can be used for special privileges.
A special trip for an ice cream. Or a night out at the movies.
No spankings for bad behavior. Take away privileges . Then explain what they should have done to please you. When you talk to these children, direct contact is a must. No yelling.
Be A Parrot Parent.
These kids act upon impulse. So you have to be prepared to tell them 3,000 times about what they are suppose to do. Not just for a day or two either. For years.
It’s very important for parents to discipline themselves, to remind the kids again and again to brush their teeth, turn off the t.v. Even if it seems obvious.
Get Them Involved With The Right Activities.
Hyper children tend to be above average in activities involving large muscle movements, but slower than average in sports that require hand – eye coordination.
So they will do very well in activities such as swimming, and soccer.
But will probably become very frustrated with baseball
Outside activities need to include good parent/ child ratio. Such as Cub Scouts, and Y M C A
Try to arrange for your child to sit close to the leader, or directly across.
Again for that direct eye contact.
Have Family Sessions.
Sibling rivalry is often a problem in families with hyper children.
Particularly if the hyper child torments a younger sibling.
One of the best ways to deal with this , outside of professional counseling is to have family meetings. Do this after the meal. Play some music, and start a spoon around the table. When the music stops the one holding the spoon, tells his story.
You may find out some things you weren’t aware of. Parents be honest.
Your kids thing you are so perfect, that even if something was bothering them, they would not reveal it. They may think a punishment was coming there way, if they did.
You all know you weren’t perfect. So if your honest, you may be able to come up with some solutions, that could make it easier on your child.
These type of children have problems, identifying with role models.
So therefore keep things bottled up.
Hyper Active children need to spend a lot of quality time, with the same sex parent.
Give Kids Responsibilites
To channel these children’s attention provide them with house hold chores.
You can incorporate the chores from about second grade on.
I recommend the child to have four chores per day. These need to be tied in with an allowance, and special privileges.
He not only gets a base allowance, but can make more money based on homework, behavior, grades, and other responsibilities.
These children make great workers, because they have so much energy.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF, THAT SUGAR OR ANY FOOD CAUSES HYPERACTIVITY.
HOWEVER MANY PARENTS BELIEVE - THAT THERE ARE FOODS THAT TRIGGER REACTIONS.

Re: Doc tips
Markio I’m back You still on?
The storm has gone. Although it hit pretty close. Even had an ambulance come by, and fire truck. Got to get the scoop on that later. I missed a couple pages on Hyperactivity. So sending now. Was in too much of a hurry to get it out before the storm’s arrival.
More On HyperactivityI
Confer With the Teacher.
If the attention problems occurs only at school, then there must be a teacher problem. Keep an ear out. If your child likes school, but refuses to go, get this checked out.
There is a reason for it. Arrange a conference with the teacher, and then discuss as possible solution.
Arrange For a hearing Check.
If your child is inattentive and easily distracted, but not overactive or impulsive consider having his hearing checked. It is possible that all the information he’s hearing, isn’t reaching his brain effectively.
Check Out Home Stresses.
If you see distractibility, overactivity, and impulsiveness in your child- maybe you’re going through a divorce, separation or other troublesome times, you need to get your child to express his feelings about them. Try and do some nit – picking when alone.
Get him to open up. These things can bring on temporary behavior.
Variety.
Try to incorporate different things in your child’s life. For instance novelty, variety, color and color. If the child has interest appeal , his attention will be longer.
Turn The Desk.
A child not so easily distracted, from an open room, or window, will focus on homework and other tasks more easier, and for longer periods. So turn the desk facing a wall.
Being A Nuisance.
Always pay attention to the behavior you do like.
Ignore your child when his behavior is, something you don’t like- but can tolerate.
Be Consistent.
Parents need to set up, and stick to schedules, and routines. Ex- the same supper time nightly, same time to watch t. v., do homework, take baths, go to bed, playing, chores etc . If the rules are to be broken, be sure an let your child know ahead of time.
Children with problems often do better, with schedules, and routines.
Studies indicate that Gamma Amino Butyric Acid decreases hyperactivity, as well as the tendency towards violence, epilepsy, mental retardation, and learning disabilities.
Various factors have been linked to hyperactivity including heredity, smoking during pregnancy, oxygen deprivation at birth, environmental pollutants, lead poisoning, and prenatal trauma. A low protein diet may even be a contributing factor.
Symptoms include head knocking, lack of concentration, disturbing other children, self destructiveness, tantrums, impatience, quick frustration and ability to sit.(even at mealtime), clumsiness, sleep disturbances, and failure in school, even if the I Q is normal. Not all symptoms are present in each child.
Hyperactivity is primarily a problem of childhood, adults can be hyper to.
Valerian root Extract has a calming effect. Mix according to age on the label.
This root is good for nervousness, headaches, stress, anxiety, convulsions, muscle cramps and spasms, improves circulation, acts as a sedative, insomnia, gas, colic, and pain.
The roots and rhizomes are used it this root. A very beneficial herb.
Studies indicate that Gamma Amino Butyric Acid - decreases hyperactivity, as well as the tendency towards violence, epilepsy, mental retardation, and learning disabilities.
Gaba can be taken to calm the body the same way a valium, or or Librium, or other tranquilizers without the fear of addiction. Gaba is being recommended in place of many drugs. Gaba functions as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system by decreasing neuron activity.
A diet is also recommended.

Re: Doc tips
thanks scamp... storming here still.... raining and thunder.... i will copy all of the info. and reread it when i can tomorrow....chase has been tested for brain activity and ears, and all the add tests and passed... he did have alot of earaches last year and infections and when he did not get his way, he would hold his breath and pass out.. he is 2 now and has outgrown all of that now, thank goodness.. he even pulls off his diaper and goes potty and is very calm about the whole process.. lexie says i am helping him improve in all areas of trouble.. i keep him on a tight schedule with lots of rest.. when i first got him, he took a three hour nap and they told me he would not nap for them....so, i am very pleased with him.. he loves to golf and tee off with real balls and golf club, he doesn't like his play golf set.. so, he is super smart....
