Default save karyn

just read the autobiograhical book about a girl who racks up a $US20,000
credit card debt in NYC on designer labels and haircuts and then starts a website, savekaryn.com, to get people to donate $ to pay off her debt. Even tho she sells MOST of her items on ebay and promises to 'one day' give the money to charity, I didn't like the concept and found her a bit spoilt princessy in the book. I think she was trying to be self-deprecating with her turning up her nose at Brooklyn and housing estates and a few cockroaches: "I am not a cockroach type of girl". I still found myself wondering if she realised that noone is above fending for themselves in less than desirable conditions in order to be self-sufficient. I can't STAND mice or cockroaches, I deal with the latter and re the former, my phobia would be dealt with or I'd leave but I wouldn't suggest that "mice don't happen to girls like me". Her mother always bailed her out and she asked the public to bail her out when mummy dearest said 'this is the last time'.

What to you guys think... the website is savekaryn.com and there is a link to the original site on the left.

This is what kicked off the cyberbegging trend. As far as I can tell, it is only successful for a select few. I do not like the concept myself, unless someone had a genuine need; such as a medical condition that racked up insurmountable bills. And, even then, how can you tell who truly has a need? Most people are just trying to get something for nothing.

I've seen similar pleas like this on other forums. I can't imagine that it would work. Even if it somehow does work for them, I do not see how someone like that will learn the value of fiscal responsibility. That is, besides learning to beg online whenever they plunge right back into debt.

Anybody seen any of the "blackmail sites?" The most egregious is probably Savetoby.com, which threatens to terminate a bunny unless enough donations can be extorted from the gullibly kind-hearted before the execution date.

I had never seen that before... but I've got to say that I think THAT is GENUIS and HILARIOUS!

Don't get me wrong. That's not an intellectual assessment by any means; but I cannot help but laugh and, at the same time, think its a great idea. He has merchandising, recipes, etc. Terriffic! And, he's bluffing. He'll never kill that bunny.

Karyn cleared her debt largely through donations. All I can do is roll my eyes.

Wow. I became interested in this concept and wondered if anyone was really using cyber 'appeals' for help in a very positive way...

It is greatly upsetting but much more for this beautiful young woman and her doting family. What would I do if that was my niece? it kills me.

I could never see myself expecting others to pay off my debt!

"You see, I'm done with my frivolous ways. I've stopped buying designer clothes. I've stopped using department store products. I decided that I really DO like Oil of Olay. It really DOES work just as well... And Old Navy is actually kind of cool... I've done my part, now I need you to do yours. I believe that this world is a good place, and if someone needs help, then they should ask for it."

I've done my part, not you need to do yours?? It is no one's responsibility to help her - she should have done her part before she racked up $20k in debt.

Haha... and I would tell them to hit me up again when they are using Equate brand and buying clothes at the Thirft Store. Until then, I doubt that I would agree they have truly "done their part" at all.

I saw this awhile ago she was on NBC and thought wow I couldn't believe people actually donated and wish that some one had did the same for me. I know it is my fault, the debt I accumulated but it would have been nice

do your part. This girl has an entitlement mentality that has been ingrained by her doting mother who never let her face the consequences of her actions. If Mum ever had to bail me out, I would suffer shame and judgement forever... I did, anyway, even when she wasn't bailing me out! haha!
