Edmunds took the time to test a few of the popular gas saving tips that you often see and gives the results of their finding:

Its good that articles like this are published. Many people get swept up in gadgets and new fangled technologies that they forget about good old common sense.
I consider myself to be a smooth driver. As soon as I see a red light in the distance I start slowing down. Most of the time it is green before I get there so I don't have to brake and then accerate from a stop. I have had a few people whizz around me only to have to stop at the red light. |

I will definitely be showing this to my DH, who has a lead foot! I try hard to use the cruise control (because that's what it's there for!) but I didn't know that it helped with gas mileage!
What a great article! |

Good information! The only potential flaw I see is that A/C on, windows up v. A/C off windows down test. While it may not make any difference at higher speeds, it would seem to me that it certainly would at lower speeds. The drag created on the vehicle at higher speeds with the windows down negates any savings gained from having the A/C off. However, at slower speeds, this drag is less and therefore some additional fuel economy should be gained. Regardless, I do not think this is a major factor anyway. To stop accelerating hard and mind your speed is likely the number one tip overall.

I always drive under 55 and I do not have a lead foot.

I had my husband fill my tires (they were pretty low) and I noticed quite a difference in my mileage.
Before the tires were filled, appx 300 mpt, after...closer to 340 mpt. I think it is worth at least a try for folks trying to stretch their gas $$ |

My car tells me the tire pressure, so I know when they are low.(each tire is shown)

Good to know I don't have to suffer the heat. Now if they could just do something when the freeway backs up!!!!
Oh, and I wish we could tell the idiots who think it's okay to go 80 in a 55 construction zone that......well....just how are they going to live with themselves when that ONE time that it mattered out of the hundreds that didn't caused an innocent person to be injured or die. Sorry, if it's harsh, but I value my life...other's driving like that are risking it. SLOW DOWN!!! Really you aren't going to save much time!! and it's NOT worth my life!! AND if you late....GET OUT OF BED EARLIER!!! Rarely will a boss be mad if an employee who is habitually ten minutes early shows up late once because of.....whatever....really people. |

Great article! I personally find that not driving at all and taking trolleys about town saves the most money. However, I realize that in the US if you don't have a vehicle, you're sunk....
