Default giving information on the web

I have been taking some surveys and siging up for coupon sites like coolsavings.com (which looks very interesting) but I am concerned about how much personal information they want. They seem to want income, address, and brith date at the minimium. Is this information safe to put on a web site. So far I've been doing it but I'm a little nervous about it. I'm drawing the line at my Social Security number. Are there any generally accepted guidelines for what is safe. Has anyone else had trouble giving out this type of information. What do you think
I'm sorry if this is not the appropriate place to askt his question. It seemed to fit best here.

This is a personal feeling, but I think you need to take care when giving the information, especially with companies you don't know a whole lot about.

I lie if it is information that is required but I don't feel that they need. Rarely do I ever write my true phone number (why do they need that?). I have also solved the address problem by renting a PO box at the post office. If there is material they need to send me, then it gets to me, but not at my home address. I never give out my real birthday (again, why do they need that?) and never my social security number unless I have reasearched the site thoroughly and have confidence in it.
