When I lived on the river, I walked 6 miles or more a day. I use to always do at least 3 a day when I moved here. Now that I have this computer, I only get in about a mile a day. I need to do better.

i've been a 'walker' all my life; last summer, the goal was to walk 60 minutes 5 days a week, and i did a decent job of meeting that goal.
Unfortunately, i seem to have inherited my dad's bad hips. He had hip replacement surgery years ago and needs again, but doesn't want to go for the surgery. I'm only in my 40s, but lately the hips have been bothering me more; used to be that they'd be the first thing to feel 'sore' after anhour's walk; now i feel much sooner than that, and now, haven't really been walking at all. I've heard that most people don't have hip replacement surgery til their 60s, so i can't imagine what i'll do if this gets worse as it only lasts for ab out a decade i think. it's my favorite form of exercise; i like walking to work, takes about 15 minutes, just down my road which leads into Main Street.

Well, I was running 3 times a week, but I have really weak ankles. It doesn't help that I have sprained both of them and had many other minor injuries to them. So, when i was running, I'd have to stop 1.5 - 2 miles in because my ankles were hurting so bad. Then, I'd hope on the bike at the gym. But, then midterms, papers and finals hit...and sadly I haven't done either in at least a month. But, for Maymester I'm taking Walking as my PE requirement and then after that, I hope to keep up the habit.

I have a little pedometer I got for free from Blue Cross Blue Shield in part of their campaign for everyone to "step up" - They say 10,000 steps a day is a good goal to shoot for, which is equal to about 5 miles.
This is not just exercise, this is wearing it all day and keeping track of all your steps. I wore it for a while when I was still in college, going to my internship, and working on the side and I would get close to 10,000 steps, without intentional exercise. I'm not sure what I get now, but I'm a preschool teacher so I'm pretty busy running around all day after the kids. Plus I go to the gym about 3 times a week now, with the warmer weather -- On the Elliptical machine I do anywhere from 3.5 miles to 5.5 miles. Plus I'm out riding my bike a lot now -- I Biked 12-13 miles last Friday, and I biked 9 miles on Sunday. |

In summer I prolly get 3 miles outside (plus chores and such), but in winter I am lucky if I get 1 all day! I need to work on that next winter.

I spent 20 minutes on our Gazelle yesterday when I usually walk 10 minutes on it. My blood sugar fell so low that my husband had to call the doctor early this morning. Some orange juice helped to bring my sugar back up. Soooo I had better say that I safely walk 10 minutes a day on our Gazelle.

I power walk with weights almost every morning between 2-4 miles. I walk as much as I can during the day when the weather is nice. On nights when I'm supervising the restaurant at work, I generally walk between 5-10 miles...I wear a pedometer to keep track.
Luckily, dh and our kids are big walkers, too. We generally do family hikes on the weekend! |

I am not a big walker these days but try to incorporate a lot of exercise such as videos etc
A good walking video for those winters months is Walk away the Pounds and it can be done with little ones around since it mostly marching in place and knee lifts. Many times I had a child in my arms. |

I walked for 2 hours last night at a pretty brisk pace, but I have no idea how many miles that might encompass. I would like to run, but running hurts. I've never been able to run for any amount of distance. I'm just not put together for it. I've thought about incorporating some sprints into my walks.
How does walking stack up against running as far as quality of exercise goes? |

says it depends on how far your going, and what you really want. It is no good if it makes you stop going... |

Probably about a mile in normal activity.
My new place is very runner friendly so Im going to start running a mile at least 3 days a week. I cant do too much cardio b/c I have a fast metabolism and am skinny enough. I just want to exercise my heart. |
