My friend's getting married in July. I'm working on making her a nice throw -- which can double as a housewarming gift or something -- because she and her fiance will be moving to a townhouse in another state after they get married (he has moved down there already to start work, she is finishing up her master's in NY).
It's a really nice pattern (I knit) for a blanket and I needed a reason to make it -- It will have cost a great deal of money for the yarn, as well as the amount of time I've put into it. |

Did they register? iot will give you an idea of what they are looking for.
One of my favorite things was a frame with my invitation 'poem' engraved on it. |

i can't really help because we mostly got money, which is the standard for our area...we're young and saving for a home in a high COL place.... still, money doesn't buy everything... i'm sure something sentimental would be very nice... i actually love the idea of the framed invite... i handmade my invites and it would have been so sweet to see that someone noticed and cared enough to keep it and preserve it for me like that... it's kind of sad thinking that everybody just threw them out after my weeks of labor...
one thing that i really liked having after our wedding were the little name/seating cards i made... i had everybody sign the back and asked them to put a message on the back... not everybody did but i loved the ones i got... especially the ones that made me smile or laugh... like the one from my little cousin where she drew a picture of us... so cute... something funny is always great too... if she doesn't need money and you are already giving her a weekend away then maybe something else like food.... everybody loves food.... or a gift certificate for a romantic dinner out?... sorry i dont' really have too many ideas... good luck... |

ThingsRemembered.com also has some actual stores -- up where I used to live anyway (western NY). I'm not sure if they are everywhere or just up in the northeast.

I like the idea of doing something special with the invitation. My SIL got one of her invitations back with a beautiful watercolor painting done over the top of it - hard to describe, but very pretty. It is framed and hanging in their home.

My brother-in-law gave us each white terri bathrobes with our pet names for each other embroidered on them.... 'Hubba and Bubba' (silly huh?)
But we thought at the time that they were just the nicest most thoughtful gifts...! I like the idea of framing the invitation too! I had ours framed and still have it 14 years later and counting! |

thanks for all the ideas.. i almost have a light blue crocheted throw completed, i think i will give it to amber... also, i love the gc, dried flowers and especially the invitation framed or painted on and matted... no, they did not register... that is what makes it so difficult...

i was just talking to one of the caterers for the wedding and she gave a tip for amber. purchase foil wrapped chocolates and wrap a few pieces up in a piece of tulle and tie with a ribbon... mints are discarded she said at many weddings...
anyway, i was thinking if someone knew of an upcoming wedding or anniversary, they could save the foil wrapped holiday chocolates, from easter, valentines, even xmas if it is a winter event...... |

update:
attended the wedding and reception today.. it was way too expensive and over the top...too much tradition and boring as could be.. they said it cost over $20,000 everything was done in lavender and white...even the dresses.. the wedding gown was really pretty.. we gave them: coral framed invitation of the wedding wedding card with gc's from a local restaurant, gc for fruit, gc for cookies, gc for flowers, gc wine. baking stone with rack album for pictures it was white (huge) 2 prints professionally framed, one was the family circle, the other was bless this house angels are among us print and professionally framed total cost to us, including wrapping paper, bows, bags, etc. $270.00 but, i bought over 3 months of time.. the wedding was planned back in april. i want to thank everyone for their helpful comments... greatly appreciated. |

I had my friend's wedding this past weekend, here's what I made for her: I started it after Christmas and finished it early June (while working on other knitting projects at the same time throughout that period). All the yarn for the blanket totalled about $150 (the pattern called for nice yarn). I gave it to her Friday night - she loved it!

I think gift certificates are a wonderful idea; maybe for a "his and hers" massage, or dinner out, museum memberships or membership to a local college radio. For one of my employees who was a real nature bug, we bought a year's membership to a local garden/hiking preserve and then assembled a picnic basket with cute china, flatware, napkins and a nice bottle of wine.
