Very short term: (next 1-2 years)
several items of furniture for the house some minor home improvements Short term: (3-5 years) eventual car replacement cross-country move in 3 years house purchase in a more expensive area in 5 years (hopefully without selling current house so we have rental income) Mid-term: (7-10 years) graduate school ability for spouse to take time off from day job to write Long term: (15 years or more) college for son in 2021 retirement for spouse in 2029 retirement for myself in 2042 Wow, that's a long list. Mostly I'm just saving as much as I can. Half the stuff on this list will probably have to be given up because we won't be able to do all this AND save adequately for retirement. |

While i'm saving to hit $1 million, deep down, i'm really saving for security.

hmm -- i will be going back to grad school this summer, so i'm pretty much saving for extra money for living expenses (emergency fund, I guess).
We're also hoping to get a dog later this summer when we move to a different apartment. Other than that, continuing to pay rent, work on paying off the car, the undergrad loans. I won't be dealing with saving for retirement until I finish my master's degree (spring 2008, age 24 - almsot 25) because as it is I will be taking out loans while I work on my master's. Edit: Vacation would also be nice, but I'd have to have enough vacation time accrued at work for that to even matter. |

Again I align myself with Fern. I save for security.
No short term goals, I'm fine there0no unmet needs and my wants are paid for too-but I would like to be a homeowner and retire with security. |

In one month: Pay DH's summer session tuition
In four months: Pay off remainder of DH's car loan In five years: Pay off all student loan debt, including DH's grad school We are always saving for retirement on top of this. |

Mostly saving for a down-payment for a house & new vehicle, (hopefully the house comes first!)
Also, trying to pay off current school loans and mortgage. |
