Default What class are you?

Oprah's show today was on class, lower class, middle class and upper class. What class are you and why do you think so?

I am middle class according to the chart which is what I would have put myself in also. I just feel stuck in the middle.

I would say though never judge a book by its cover I think that just shows alot about those people who were like well I act this way & I am well to do next week they will probably be on the debt diet show!!!

I Know so many people who act rich & dont have 2 pennies to rub together & lots of people you would think are poor who sit on gold mines!!

Sorry Ima I did not see this post I just finished watching Oprah and I think I classify people by appearance, conversation, and many other factors. You know it never really dawned on me that I was actually doing so <!-- / message -->

That link to the Oprah site doesn't say anything about family size. According to that, I am upperclass, but there are 4 in my family. I would consider our family to be somewhere between middleclass and upper middle class. I love to thrift shop and save money on MOST things with little extravagances here and there.

If you go by my boyfriend's and my combined income, we are in the middle of middle class. Individually, we are both on the cusp of low/middle class. But, we are both 22, and neither of us is in our desired job right now -- he is currently a PhD grad student and I am a preschool teacher about to go back to graduate school. When we are both done with grad school, and working real jobs, our combined income will put us well into the "upper class" bracket. (according to Oprah's figures).

I like thrifty ray's answer. I am content with what I have too. I am considered middle class although when I go to parties with all these upper class people, I feel pretty poor!

We are a couple thousand into middle class (as in if DH didn't work overtime, like he isn't this year...)

But we live around middle middle 9heh) and upper middle, guess we just pay too much for our house..

Having a house early and paying it off early helped me go from lower class to middle class.

Technically, we are middle class. But, I was raised poor white trash and I will always be "lower class".

Whatever happened to working class. Well, I started off in a housing project and now live in a very good suburb of NYC. Wife and I combined are upper class. This class stuff is pretty nutty though. Our income some place else would go a lot further. Heck what we make could not let us live in Manhattan for instance. Does that mean we are upper in the burbs but lower in the city. It is all pretty meaningless unless you consider life style and local costs.

I don't agree with defining someone based on 'class'...

Labeling folks because of what they make is senseless to me because there are so many variables...and bottom line, why care? It is just another way to draw lines.

IMO 'success' should be about the well being and happiness of the individual family unit...and I have seen many, many examples of people who are "upper class' that are miserable...and 'lower class' that are very happy/fulfilled.

What is important to me, may not necessarily be important to another and vise-versa.

I personally look at the person rather than their income or status....
Ok...hopping off the soap box now.

I certainly agree with you Ray. You can be very happy with very little money and completely miserable with lots of money!! I don't judge people by the amount of money they have. Personality is what matters when I acquire a new friend!
