Default Cycling for Savings and Health

With the price of gas going crazy how many here are looking to cycling as a means of getting around? It promotes health and it sure is cheaper than burning gas!

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this before -- but when we first moved, my boyfriend and I were sharing a car. Before I found a job here, I rode my bike around to check out the area, and for exercise. When I got the job, I rode my bike to work (~4 miles each way) from mid August until the end of October (then it got to be a little chilly and when I had to work at 6:30 it was still dark when I had to leave our apartment).

I would love to do this...but I can't for the following reasons:

1) In metro-atlanta, it isn't really safe. There are too many MAJOR roads and too many CRAZY drivers.
2) I work 10 miles away and the only way to get there is the highway. (Unless you want to add 45 minutes to your trip)
3) I go to school 50 miles away. (Commuting is still cheaper than living on campus!!!)

But, I still want to pick up cycling just for exercise.

Dh has been biking to work for about two years now. He used to have to commute 25 miles or so one way, but when he changed jobs his commute was cut down to about 2.5 miles. He bikes almost every day.

I'll be wokring this fall at DD's school, but it's about 16 miles one way, so we'll stick with carpooling as we can.

I have started cycling into town to run small errands. I don't have to use the car as much. I am a bit out of shape but the cycling ought to help that.
My only problem is that some of the Auto drivers don't much care for me being on the road with them.

We have a big problem in my city with those electric scooters. They are the same size as a normal petrol scooter but run on a battery or pedal power. They can only do up to 30k/h and hold up traffic. It is really hard to get around them. At least with cyclists the bike doesn't take up too much room.
Legally we have to ride on the edge of the road but for safety reasons I ride on the footpath if available. Giving way to pedistrians. I'd rather cop the fine than get hit by a truck.
I tend to walk more than ride. One of the reasons I bought where I did was so that I could walk to all the services I could possibily need.
