Default Have you ever fibbed on your resume?

Looks like another executive is going down because he lied on his resume. Have you ever "stretched the truth" on your resume?

Nope, but I have had bosses who said "I had you doing that?!" "Yes, you did and you didn't pay me for it, did you?" Then I would go over exactly what I did and they'd agree that that was what I was doing, they just hadn't thought of it that way.

Never about my qualifications, but once I stretched the truth about how long I had worked somewhere (only by a couple months) because I thought the gap between jobs was too large. Those were in my younger and stupider days.

I've given approximate dates of employment on odd jobs going back to the 70's and 80's, but designate it as such on the application or resume accordingly. There is no future in lying on a resume. You will get caught so I would advise never to do it.

I have changed the dates a bit to lessen the gab a bit but I have never lied about my qualifications.

No way. I've certainly put a spin on real experiences to make them more compatible with the job I'm applying for, but I would never actually lie.

I know someone who lied, got the job, and then when they found out he really couldn't do the work he got demoted. Very humiliating but he deserved it.

I had the opposite problem. When I left science and took on standard office jobs, I de-emphasized the PhD to get work because I was over-qualified.

I've never lied on a resume, but while in college I wanted a part time waitressing job and the only waitressing I had done was in strip clubs. I changed "JB's Gallery of Girls" into "JB's family restuarant" and "Clancy's" (another strip club) into a respectable restuarant. I was then living several states away.

I had the same situation as baselle. I was applying for garden jobs after having a 4 year BS in Agri, and nobody would hire me. I wouldn't get any reasonable job in my field because I was brand new in this country. So I just told them about my HS and got a job real fast !!

Nope never fibbed on my resume.

Though, I've looked @ my resume & wondered how to polish up my termination of my last job without have to attach another sheet to explain that disaster? or to fib just a lil?

Shelby, why would you mention your termination at all on your resume. Just the dates and let it go. If they ask for more clarification in an interview, then be prepared, but the resume is only good things.

Question Re: Have you ever fibbed on your resume?

I just left off the first five years that I worked at 10 different jobs, just put that I work casual if I need experience in that field. All the places that I worked for do not exist any longer, even my last job just the company with a different name too! Also the HS school that I had on resume no longer exist. Everywhere I worked or went to school had not existed for last 20 years before they closed the last store that I worked for. It's only in the last 10 years that I needed a resume to apply for jobs anyway and now I am retired but I still can apply for work. For myself, my last job would be enough to apply for a job here but at my age, I would not get very far in an interview!

Does anyone else have this problem what your work and school records no longer exist for them to check anything?

No, I haven't...potential employers do background checks, and they do sometimes call your former employer, so it's always better to be truthful on the resume, or else your fib will find you out!

Except for the last company that I worked for who have records that I worked for them.

My last two jobs were over 30 years between them. All the buildings and the companies no longer exist. All other former employers have died and they records no longer exist but for the ATO's archive. I started working in 1959.

I know that won't go on a resume. But it does go on a handwritten applications & that's what worries me. Not that I'm planning on looking again for the time being, but what to say when it comes up @ an interview or even on the app.
