Default Free cat food?

Any ideas to get free cat food? My husband and I are feeding 5 stray cats at his work (one of those things you start and then feel too guilty to ever stop, lol!). The cat food is making a dent in our grocery budget. Any ideas? I watch for coupons and sales but it seems like the generic is always cheaper in the long run anyway. I heard that you can get a coupn for a free bag of Purina through the Purina One 30-day challenge website, but I couldn't find anything on the site about it... TIA!

Here is the link you are looking for. I'm not sure if the offer is still valid. I have done this in the past and gotten the coupon.

Amy, in the long run you'd be doing those cats and any progeny a greater service if you could have them spayed and neutered, assuming that, as strays, they aren't now. Otherwise, by feeding them, you're just going to encourage they keep reproducing endlessley, and stray cats lead a hard, hard life. Come to think of it, if you're spending all this $$ on feeding them, why not just take them in off the streets?

I so wish we could! But, we live in a rented house and there's no way we could take in 5 stray cats. All of the local "no kill" shelters are full and I refuse to take them somewhere where they might be euthanized. Another problem is that the cats are ferral (sp?) and we can't catch them. They're pretty skittish. I feel bad and wish there was something more we could do! We can't afford vet care for them either. The SPCA said they would bring out a bunch of food but they never have. It's a bad situation all the way around.

I commend your efforts and kindness. My two neighbors do the same things and we are so over run with cats it not even funny. I love cats and have 2 indoor cats myself, but these cats are going to the bathroom everywhere and they dig up my flower gardens. I feel bad and wish the community would offer a free or low cost spay and neuter program because what happens is these cats just keep multiplying and inbreeding which causes illness. Maybe your community has a free spay/neuter program. You could call and ask a local vet if they know of one. Also if you have feedmills in your area bulk cat and dog food is always cheaper there. Good luck.

Thanks all!

BignRichfan - fortunately these cats aren't bothering anyone (i.e. neighbors) that I know of. They pretty much stay in a fenced in parking lot area behind my husband's work. They have a "cat house" that we made them and an area all of their own. It's mostly businesses in the area, not houses.

I will look into free spay/neuters -- the tricky part will be catching them!
