Moving to Las Vegas

I live in California.

I cannot afford it anymore. I am in school full time and my husband works. Recently our apartment building was sold and the new owners are going to raise our rent from $957 to $1200. We cannot afford that.

Here's the dilemma:

I was accepted to the police academy for the next class in March. I can't do academy and school at the same time because the academy is too demanding. I am faced with either postponing school or giving up on my police career. Last year when I wanted to move to Las Vegas my husband shot down the idea. Now that he wants to move I am so close to becoming a police officer.

I am crying as I write this because it is driving me crazy <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNxmk572DHUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_9_4.gif' alt='I Can't' border=0></a>.

I can't sleep at night thinking about it. Being a cop is my dream, but I do wonder how to cope with the long hours and missing my children. That part I really hate and sometimes I think it's not worth it. But how can I be so selfish not to move and give my family a better opportunity with a bigger house to rent for the same price just because I'm chasing a dream? My DH says the decision is up to me because he does not want to make me give up my dream, but we are both frustrated with the quality of life here in California.

Poor thing, I am so sorry you are having to go thru this.!! What will your husband do for a living if you move?

I truly feel for you. I also left CA to follow my husband's career, and gave up my own. I took a entry position and thought my career was over with.

I was lucky in that my previous experience let me rise quickly into a high ranking position and income. But I was pretty miserable for the first year, and DH had to provide ALOT of support to get me through.

I miss CA, but not the traffic and prices and taxes...

You are being pretty hard on yourself, though. You don't sound selfish, just surprised, and realistic.

Ask yourself, are a bigger house and money going to make a happier family if you are miserable? Or can you come up with a plan to still become a police officer, or maybe a related position that you would like even better? Las Vegas has so many opportunities. It's not all casinos and glitz - you'd be surprised at how many defense contractors there are there!

I know I'm being hard on myself. It's a bad habit, I know.

I have a very happy family life. My marriage is great, couldn't ask for a better husband. My kids don't give me any problems. The only thing missing is financial stability. We aren't going without food or anything like that, but we're tired of "just getting by" or having "just enough". Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for riches, just a cushion. I've never had a cusion. I have considered doing something else in the line of law enforcement so I'm checking out those possibilities in Vegas.

As for my husband, if we moved I would work and he would go back to school like we planned. He has been working at the same place for 15 years and never had a chance to further his education.

A great spouse will understand your dilemma. He will also understand compromise so that you both benefit as a fmaily and individuals with dreams and desires. Check all options in Nevada for BOTH of you. The tax advantages alone would be worth the move, and while you might have to wait for the Academy until your husband graduates, you will still be able to realize your dream.

I cannot imagine paying rent of $1200 a month.. You could buy a pretty good house here and make house payments for less than that. I know I will never be able to afford to make payments like that, so I will stay in good old Georgia.

I will work and he will go back to school. I really want him to do this because his education has been on hold for several years while he was waiting for me to finish. I graduate this June/July and now it's his turn to go to school.
