Sorry, for some reason I could not post a new thread. I would like to take a survey. Please read your gas bill and tell us the breakdown of the charges. For example: MichCon in Pontiac Michigan = 1.06 per british thermal unit (btu) with a $7.50 customer surcharge with 6% sales tax. Please state where you live. Also, how are you doing on the gas bill. We are COLD. The house temp is set at 58 degrees and the indoor temp is 55. we have several layers of clothes on. The master bedroom for some reason is maintained at 67 degrees so we spend most time there. Our heat bill this month for this priveldge of being cold=expected to be $260. We have incorporated cold wash for dishes and laundry. Sponge bathe at sink as needed with a weekly shower, fast! I use my toaster oven you all taught me in the summer and I purchased a hot plate at Kmart. I use no gas to cook. My electric bill is down. I wonder if that hot water heater and oven were increasing the electric use. Ironic. Okay, Jeffery, please move this to a new forum called: the gas bill; how cold are you?

I'm with Aquila in Minnnesota and they were charging (at the last bill -- another will being coming very soon) $1.28/ Therm (Google says 1 Therm = 100,000 btu, so maybe you meant therm?) plus a $6.50 customer charge. Evidently there is no state tax. We keep the house at 64ish during the day and 58ish at night. (I say "ish" because sometimes we cheat.) We also use natural gas for hot water, oven, stove, and dryer. We're not super frugal with those things. Dh and I both take showers every day, I use the dryer, dishwasher, etc. We pay the same every month, but I expect the "real" bill this month with be about $180.

We heat with propane gas. I keep the house about 60 downstairs and turned down to the lowest it will go upstairs. Since heat rises, the upstairs is about the same as downstairs. I live in the mountains of North Georgia.

Don't have bills in front of me, but my budget plan for the year is at $398, monthly. For 1 person, keeping heat at 58 at night, 63 during the day. Had a window with no storm but didn't realize it... the window next to the house thermometer, of course! Will be able to ask for a review in 3 months.

$400 a month for gas? That is unreal! I put $800 of propane (200 gallons) in this winter and it should last most of the winter, I hope. We heat an extra 2 car garage w/bath, so that hurts too.

The worst part is this may affect the trip I want to take to England in 2006. I have my plane ticket in hand, an offer of a place to stay in London, and will need spending money/hostess stuff. sigh

Marjorie I thought you did a misprint at first! My goodness I would die if my heat was that much per month! I try to keep my heat at 61 degree for at least 18 hours and 67 for 6 hours.

my house is 65 all the time, and we paid $80 ish last month. But we live in NC, not in the mountains either.

Woohoo! Just got the gas bill and it came in at a mere $116.69. Better than the $180 I was planning for, but . . . .I remember when my Streamline account (year long, same amount every month) was $29 a month. Those days are long gone along with 97 cent gas . . . .

When i was much younger, I paid 17 cents for a gallon of gas!

I bought my girlfriend an oil lamp for Christmas. I was amazed at how much heat that thing really puts out. We used it for 6 hours the other night and it's fuel consumption seamed to be unnoticable. So I'm guessing it used about $0.02 of fuel in that 6 hour period.
It seams that this may be a tremendous alternative to efficient space heaters. Brandon |
