What do you do?
Where did you graduate? GPA? What degree did you earn? starting salary and current salary? And the most inportant, Do you enjoy your job? If you are uncomfortable discussing any of these it is perfectly fine. I am currently in college and am still looking to what field I want to go in. I know what degrees it takes to make a very desirable salary; but why work somewhere you hate and takes away from family. Any information you can give would be much appreciated. God bless and have a wonderfull day. |

I don't mind speaking of these things at all
Please note, however, that I am first and foremost a mum to my CJ. That is my number one job that I would not trade for anything.Outside of being CJ's mum, I am as follows: What do you do? Paralegal - Will Litigation, Trust LItigation and Probate Where did you graduate? - University of Florida, Gainesville, United States GPA? - 3.9 What degree did you earn? - Pre Law and Paralegal Certificate (Nov 2005) Starting and current salary? - As a entry level legal assistant USD $10 per hour. As an entry level paralegal it ranges from USD $50 - 55K yearly. ( Not bad, but also not much considering the trmendous responsibilities) And the most inportant, Do you enjoy your job? I love it! And I adore the idea that we help out those who were cheated out of their rightful inheritances by unscrupulous, nasty relatives. |

My answers wouldn't help you, because I live in Central America, but, I DO know this:
choose something you love!....I have worked at a company where I earned a lot more money than what I'm currently making, but where I was so miserable, I even ended up in the hospital with migraine attacks...I'm making a lot less now, and it IS difficult, but, I enjoy my work, I feel very motivated, love the people I work with (for the most part!)...I recently went to a b-day party for someone that works at the old company and, it was great seeing them all, and, despite the fact that I probably was the person making the least $$ at the table, hearing their tales of misery at work made me feel blessed!! |

Sorry but I am going to give you my cynical viewpoint.
It is hard to make a good decision on careers because in corporate America over the past several years Upper level management and boards of directors have started changing the rules mid-game. IT is not the only profession being outsourced to foriegn countries for cheaper labor. I find it interesting that President Bush encourages outsourcing and says we are going to get better jobs for americans. First who is he to decide what is a better job for you or me. Second most of the newly created jobs I see lately are in the service sector and pay around $7 a hour. You can't support a Family or even a single person in most cities for that. As for the answers to your question I have some college no degree. I am a flight attendant for a major airline, currently in bankruptcy. I make about $30,000 a year and I am at the top of the payscale. I could increase my flying hours and make about $40000. I started at around 17,000 a year 15 years ago. I used to absolutely love my job. Now, this is a loaded question. 95% of the time I love the crew I work with. The working with people on the plane I still enjoy about 70 % of the time. With long security lines, long customer service lines, less (or no) amenities and less flight attendant staffing many a customer is disgruntled so we are dealing with more problem resolution. I used to love to talk to and serve customers, now with the limited staffing there is not usually time for that. It is throw a drink and coctail snack at you and move to the next person. We work long hours with minimal rest and may cross several time zones. Frankly we're tired, our feet hurt, and we miss the way it used to be. I admit I was spoiled by what I considered to be the best job in the world for many years but it no longer exists. Anyway I guess I kind of made this a long story but the short of it is, as long as you are working for someone else there are no guarentees that what you get upon graduation is what you will have somewhere down the line. I am very glad you posed this question because I need to a new career, However with the exception of stay at home mom(and I did that for 8 years and my youngest child is 18) nothing listed so far even remotely appeals to me. I hope people will keep the list going. Thanks for the thread and sorry again for the negativity |

What do you do? PT Service Coordinator for people with developmental disabilities (State of NY job) - 20 to 25 hours per week, PT real estate agent - anywhere from 0 to 10 hours per week
Where did you graduate? Le Moyne College, Syracuse NY GPA? 3.9 What degree did you earn? Sociology with a concentration in Human Services starting salary and current salary? I earned $15,500 at my first job in a shelter, then about $20k in my next job (both non-profits). Now I work for the state and would be making $35k+ if I worked full-time. I pull in anywhere from $5-10k a year doing real estate. And the most inportant, Do you enjoy your job? I call my real estate my "fun" job and my other job is for the benefits (right now DH is a student so we need the health insurance, plus the other benefits are great too). I wouldn't say I love my job, but I don't hate it either. It could be a lot worse (and it was when I worked in a shelter in a very bad, bad part of the city). I work only during the week, no holidays, a good amount of time off, and I really like the people I work with, so those factors go a long way. Real estate is a lot more fun, but there are absolutely no benefits, no base salary, etc. so it is a very hard way to raise a family. |

Thank you al for posting and hope to hear from more of you. Here is the answers to my own question. Remember my school is my top priority over work.
What do you do? Animal Nanny ( walk, feed, clean up after animals while owners are away at work, vacation, or what ever other activity long enough to need services) Where did you graduate?Currently going to a CC and then transfer to SJSU GPA? 3.0, trying to raise to 3.5 What degree did you earn? Currently thinking about economics then MBA in marketing. But we all know how that can change. starting salary and current salary? $12 dollars for 30 min visit. work anywhere from 10-50 visits a week. Average is about 30. A little less then 20,000 a year. Same salary as when hired. And the most inportant, Do you enjoy your job? Oh man I love my job. Right now I am watching a 4 month old lab. My instructions are to walk for 15 minutes and play for 15 minutes. How sweet is that? Hopefully I will enjoy my 'career job' as much as I do this one. |

What do you do? Membership Coordinator for a Non Profit
Where did you graduate? n/a - 1/2 way to associate's degree GPA? Umm about A/B average, don't know % What degree did you earn? n/a yet starting salary and current salary? $27,500 and $44,200 now - been there 2 1/2 years, had some promotions. And the most inportant, Do you enjoy your job? ABSOLUTELY. I work for a boss that believes in fairness, acknowledges each person for their hard work, pays us well, has an annual Staff Appreciation Day in NYC for dinner and a Broadway play, automatic annual increase for cost of living plus whatever else you deserve in addition to that, annual bonus, I get to travel, went to Vegas last year for free, everything paid 100% (brought my SO with and he was paid for too)... wonderful people, sounds corny, but truly 'family.' Even have friendships with some of the well known customers that we see frequently at meetings. It will be difficult to ever find another job like this. No micromanaging, complete and total trust, high morale. ![]() |

What do you do? Librarian/archivist
Where did you graduate? Masters from Rutgers (undergrad unimportant) GPA? Don't know. Mostly A's, some B's. What degree did you earn? Master's in Library and Info Science starting salary and current salary? Started at 32K in 2001. Now would be earning about 40K if I was full time. And the most inportant, Do you enjoy your job? Hmm. Well. Yes, I do, mostly. I work two part time jobs. One as a reference librarian, which is a lot of one-on-one teaching and also classroom teaching. That job is really tiring but rewarding and fun. At least once every shift somebody says to me, "wow, nobody's ever explained that to me before. That's going to help me so much with all my assignments." I feel like I'm making a big difference in people's lives. Other part time job: Archivist and cataloger. Work with historical documents. Good coworkers, interesting work, very flexible, but sh***y working conditions and huge evil beuroctatic university. Would recommend to anyone who wanted a relatively low-stress but low-paying job. You won't get rich, esp since you need a master's degree to be a librarian and the salaries are much much lower than the typical business major makes right out of college. |

What do you do? I am a Preschool Teacher
Where did you graduate? Nazareth College, Rochester NY GPA? 3.0 What degree did you earn? B.A. Psychology starting salary and current salary? Starting: $10.00 (August 05) Current: $10.25/hr. And the most important, Do you enjoy your job? I enjoy my job right now, but it's not what I want to do long-term. I am doing this for a year before hopefully going back to college to get my Master's in School Psychology to become a School Psychologist in an elementary or middle school. Prior to this I was a resident counselor at a Runaway and Homeless shelter for teens, where I was paid $8/hr. I liked what I did but it was difficult to not take my work home with me, as I worked with an always changing at-risk group of teens. Probably underpaid for the work I was doing, but the hours were flexible and ranged from 5 hour shifts to 12 hour shifts, and included overnight shifts if I wanted them. |

What do you do?
Help people discover how to budget in a way that suits them. GPA? Don't know. Mostly A's, some B's. What degree did you earn? Bachelor of Education Diploma of teaching starting salary and current salary? $2.45 per Saturday morning packing groceries while still at school. And the most inportant, Do you enjoy your job? Love it. Today I've been emailing back and forth to a person in Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef and another two people in the United States. Most of the work is crunching code for the Personality Budgeting Program which is now used in 43 countries around the world. |
