The bulb of daffodil contains lycorine or narcissine a toxin that acts as an emetic in small amounts and can cause collapse and death by paralysis of the central nervous system in larger doseages. There have been recorded cases of poisonings from people mistakenly eating daffodil bulbs thinking they were onions. I certainly would not eat daffodil.

Do you mean Dandelions? Dafodils are not in season now. Dafodils are the American Cancer Flower that blooms in the spring. It looks like a tulip with a skirt.
All parts of the Dandelion can be eaten. Most people prefer the leaves. Eat them like you would a salad. Mum flowers are also eatable and very tasty; however their leaves and bulbs form a strong antiseptic and should be avoided. Prickly pear cactus is one of my favorite wild plants that I love to eat. Also Jojoba flowers can be eaten and are very good cooled and sprinkled with vinegar salad dressings. Avoid eating plants that you can't identify. 90% of plants and berries are safe, its the other 10% that I worry about. |
