Question Crockpot and

Receipes....

Can most recepies that are cooked in the oven be cooked in a crockpot?

I enjoy using the crockpot, but a lot of my receipes say to bake, so I was curious.

except cooking pasta. You can warm up speg in it just fine, but never ever try to cook it (the pasta part)--well, unless you are making glue......

You guessed it. And, we did use it for glue--I read somewhere that starchy liquids could be used for glue, so the kids tried some on papers, and it stuck them together quite well!!

I often cook things differently than the recipe states. You usually have to adjust the recipe slightly. Liquid does not disappear (what's the word?) in the crockpot as it does in other types of cooking so will require less liquids. What I usually do is take something meant to be cooked in the oven and make it into a stir-fry dish! I like to fix fast, simple meals and I have stir-fries down so they are very quick and easy for me to fix.

Pasta doesn't work in the crock pot, but converted rice does pretty well.

I'd love to have more crockpot recipes. It's so hot here in FL that I hate to use the oven in the summer. (I even hate to use the stove). So I try and use the crockpot more. I recently tried stuffed peppers in the crockpot and they were fantastic! I stuffed them with hamburger and rice mixture, wrapped them in foil and put in the crockpot for about 4 hours. Very yummy!

Any other crockpot recipes you can share with me?

Also, I find that 8 hours on low (while I'm at work) tends to make every thing over cooked and mushy...any ideas about how to work around this problem?

My sil gave me a recipe for chicken cacciatore...it's delicious. Put about 8 pieces of uncooked chicken in the crockpot (we use legs and thighs) and pour 2 cans of spaghetti sauce on top. Cook on low for 8 hours and serve over cooked spaghetti. Yep, don't make the spaghetti in the crockpot...you can add green/red peppers, onions, garlic, and mushrooms to the sauce before you start cooking.
We sometimes put cut up chicken in the crockpot and pour bbq sauce on top and cook for 8 hours. It is so tender and the meat really soaks up the flavour.

Sounds yummy...I'll have to try that. Do you find that 8 hours makes the chicken too mushy?

Oh Sonj, I would love to see the recipes. I am interested in the low-fat and especially low-sodium approach to cooking and most of the crock-pot recipes you find starts with: a can of soup.... which is nothing more than a calorie loaded salt pill.

Jeffery, help us!

Hi Jeffrey,

you mention a can of soup and I had to laugh, several but not a lot start with a can of soup! LOL but as said before they are low cal to say the least and Low sodium.

The only way I know how to send them is to a personal email address.
