Does anyone have an idea of what I can use for a popcicle mold?? I am sorry to say i dont even own an icecube tray (i use the icemaker)--basically i am wanting to recycle something i may normally throw away. dont suggest film cannisters--i have a digital camera, and have no cannisters. i used to have a cookbook that listed in the back 10 things you could use for molds--all i can remember from that list is ice cube trays and film cannisters. my daughter cant tolerate the ingredents in the store ones, so i am going to make my own juicepops. i used to have a tupperware mold for them, but can not find it anywhere. they cant be too big

film canistars leave a film residue so please don't use them for food or for baby stuff.
if you have small sippy cups they might work filled partway (or non sippy, just small) I have heard of somepeople using the little dixie cups and then throwing the paper cup away, don't htink you want that not so frugal option, but it is a size to aim for. |

The 8 oz yogurt cups with the plastic lids!
You poke a slit into the middle of the lid with a sharp pair of scissors (be really careful, don't want the doctor bill for stitches to negate your savings). You fill the cup with your popsicle mixture, pop the lid on, and put in a popscicle stick in the slit (saved from store bought popsicles or carmel apples and washed in the dishwasher). If I wound up with a partial cup, I would make a "striped" popscicle and add the next batch's partial amount to it. The kids loved the striped ones. I used to do this all the time. My kids loved these and they are so much more healthier than the store bought ones. I would throw over-ripe bananas, or leftover pieces of apple, or whatever into a large yogurt container, or two if there were contrasting flavors, in the fridge. At least every other day, I would throw it in the blender and make some up. I would throw almost anything into the container for popsicles: leftover bits of cool whip (that last little bit in the bowl), peanut butter, dabs of jelly (pour a little milk in the empty jar and shake), bits of yogurt, leftover bits of large candybars, those last few chocolate chips (unless you are like me and eat them), that last little dab of juice in the bottom of the container. I haven't tried it, but I have heard of people making cocoa and freezing it. Hmm, cocoa or chocolate milk blended with peanut butter would make a reece's-type of popsicle (got to try that!!). You are supposed to be able to use kool-aid to make popsicles, but since it has dye in it, I have never tried it (actually realized recently that my kids have never actually had kool-aid). I have heard of people making ones out of flat soda pop also. Break a banana in half and put a popsicle stick in the broken end and throw in the freezer. I have heard of people wrapping them in foil before they put them in the freezer. I have also heard of people rolling the banana in nuts or chocolate chips and freezing (probable would have to use foil for that). |

If you have a dollar store near you, check it out. If they don't have actual popsicle molds, they may have tupperware, ice cube trays or cheap plastic cups...

I got some popsicle molds for about $3.00 a few years back. Very well worth it.
Have you seen the price of popsciles lately? For pennies I can make the same ones. |

pennies, and a lot less sugar (we use watered down juice)

I always used the little paper cups to peel off. Then i bought 2 popcicle molds either they suck or i do, sot sure. My popcicles always stick to the mold, how do you get it not to?

Run under cold water, then 'pop'

choco-bananos are very popular here in ES, you put a stick on one end of the banana and dip it in chocolate fudge, then put them in the freezer so the chocolate hardens...yummy!

I just saw the 6 pk mold at Wal-Mart for $1 and while it's not a recycled item, it's still a good deal as the "set" will be together and there is less chance of it falling over on the freezer rack. Just a thought.

Another good investment is an ice cube tray, or two. You just HAVE to own ice cube trays, it's the law!
Put a piece of fresh cut strawberry in each compartment. Stick a toothpick into the fruit. Fill with juice and freeze. Send the kids (or husband) outside to eat. Ok- my other ice cube tricks... Cooking bacon for breakfast? Let the grease cool slightly, pour into an ice cube tray, freeze, unmold and store in labeled plastic bags. Perfect size to season a pot of vegtables. A wonderful treat for the dog. When you cook a pot of vegtables, save the juice. Fill an ice cube tray, label and freeze. Unmold and store in a labeled plastic bag. Tomato paste cubes are perfect to thicken up a pot of sauce. Leftover hot dog chili cubes. One cube per hot dog. Use your imagination, the ice cube tray is your friend! (Just be sure to label!) |

I actually don't own a real icecube tray, terrible I know. I do have the mini cube kind, which is perfect for small baby food.
Oh and on the icepops, I have a tupperware set, I know it wasn't the cheapest investment, but I love the fact that the lids are 'stuck' so no spilling in the freezer or the way outside, or on the way to the freezer. and I had the cheap one from walmart and it cracked and busted so instead of making 4 it made 2. (but still took up the room of 4) |
