Default Multi-item coupons

I just did my first "real" attempt at some couponing, mostly with internet coupons, and discovered a small problem..

I had a "Cheerios" coupon scan against a box of Golden Grahams (which was fine with me), and then a "Total" coupon scanned against the Cheerios! Leaving me one coupon short in the end, because my second Cheerios coupon wouldn't scan against the Total

Anyway, is this fairly normal? Is there any (fairly simple) way to tell if a coupon that says one thing actually works on a family of products?

(btw, my trip total was $30 for $64 total value, so I'm still pretty happy, given that it was stuff I actually needed )

I work retail part time, and the answer is "Yes." Most coupons will work no matter what you are buying actually. Like your Cherrios coupon. It will most likely work with any box of cereal that is made by the same company that Cherrios is made by. It may even work with any box of cereal period or possibly with anything that you buy at all. Often, the computer reads coupons as 50 cents off (insert item here.) Sometimes it doesn't matter what you buy. I run across this alot.

Thanks.. I'll be careful about what order I use coupons in the future.. (and those doubleable $0.75-off Total cereal coupons just became a lot more valuable )
