Default Yogurt

Any yogurt eaters out there? I'm eating more in my attempt to lose weight and burn fat, but to tell the truth I get tired of eating them plain out of the containers. I have mixed them with fruit which is really good and I was wondering what other mixtures people do out there to give me a bit of variety. Thanks.

If you have popsicle molds, you can make tasty frozen yogurt treats.

Do you make your own yogurt? I bought a machine and starting making it myself because it's so expensive in those little containers. You can add all kinds of things to it when you make it...jam, berries, coffee, tea, sugar, no sugar, etc etc. I've found I like it plain, though! Here's my yogurt maker, and it's works great: here

Take the low fat yogurt and put it in a cheese cloth. HAng over sink until fluid all drains out. You now have a low cal/fat spread. Add some onion dip and you have a low fat/cal dip.

Kashi, does the yogurt you make have the same active cultures? I know nothing of the science of ygurt, but we have to get the sunnyfields stuff for the cultures (boy does that cost!)

Course the cheap stuff is SOOOO sweet, so that would I bet be cured by making it, but we have to have the bacteria .

um....well, you make it by mixing 4 cups of milk, 5 Tbsp of plain yogurt, and I add some powdered milk to make it thicker. I buy a small cup of plain yogurt at the grocery store and use that for the mix. Then you pour the mix into the yogurt maker cups, and 6-10 hours later you have yogurt. I thought all yogurt had cultures, so I don't really know....but I imagine if you made it with plain sunnyfield yogurt, it would be essentially the same.

Ok so I got DH convinced that he would eat the yogurt, how do I convince him the kids will? Does it come with flavor recipes? DH is the only one who eats it plain, (with chocolate chips).

It does come with a few recipes, if I remember correctly. I'll look again when I'm at home. I remember it saying that you can add jam or jelly to it to make it berry flavored yogurt. You could also put fresh fruit in. Do they eat yogurt now? If so, I'd try to duplicate the flavors they eat.

yeah they eat blueberry and strawberry. I was thinking frozen fruit cause it is mushy and blends creamier, but it isn't as sweet, not that I wnat them to have the sugar.

I have my first batch going right now. I have some homemade strawberry jelly from my mom, so I used that to attempt strawberry yogurt. We'll see!

Kashi - Have you tried vanilla yogurt at all? I'm trying to figure out how much vanilla and sugar to use. Vanilla is my all-time favorite flavor of yogurt. I love Yoplait's custard style vanilla - have for years and years.

Add a little honey to it if you don't want them to have sugar. You can also puree some fruit and add it with whole and it will make it sweeter.

I haven't made flavored yogurts yet....I've only made the plain, and added fresh strawberries and a little sugar afterwards, or eaten it plain. I definitely want to try it, though. I just bought a fresh jug of milk and yogurt, so I'm going to make some this weekend. I hope yours turns out!

Hey DivaJen, how is your yogurt maker?

Grape nuts are a great idea, BillsGirl. I'll have to try that.
