Really? Then I would think that skim would be cheaper as well.

As the daughter of dairy farmers, I can assure you that the price increases are NOT usually passed on to the farmers. Until 2 years ago, my parents were receiving the same price for milk that they received in 1980, despite their costs doubling. Just in these past two years have the prices they receive for the milk started to rise, so I am not usually one to mind slightly higher milk prices when I know the increases are going to the farmers. Think of how many years the cost of milk has remained relatively stable for consumers.
There's a joke about the farmer who won a million dollars in the lottery. When asked what he was going to do with it, he replied, "I guess I will just keep farming until it's gone!" Farming is a neverending, thankless job. I am not trying to be confrontational here, but I don't want people to get the impression that farmers are getting fat off these prices. Thank your local farmers for keeping our food costs down. I'm no expert, but I believe food costs have not gone up nearly as much as the general rate of inflation, and that here in the US we don't spend nearly as much of our income on food as in other nations.
Signed,
A farmer's daughter in NY

If you can tolerate soymilk you can make soymilk for less than 20 cents a gallon if you use a soymilk maker and buy soybeans in bulk at a feed store online like Walton feeds.

in Princeton NJ at Wegmans, it's $2.39 for a gallon of skim milk, on sale, regular is closer to $2.59.

In Rochester NY at Wegmans this summer, it would always be on sale for $1.99.

!! And I thought 2.59 was a lot. I didn't realize it was $4 a gallon in some parts of the country! I guess it's good to be in the northeast (or near NY, anywhere, where there were several dairies, i.e. upstate farms).

we only buy fresh milk when it is on sale.. our discount drugmart
has a half gallon for a dollar.. the 2nd or 3rd day of each month.
we purchase occasionally, the milk that is a couple of days prior to the expiration date and it is fine for 10 more days, then we add a pinch of salt to it. then it lasts another 5 days.. we used powdered milk alot for baking... we use canned milk for pudding, and mashed potatoes.

Just got a gallon of skim for $2.29. We go through about 1 every 5 days to a week, between the two of us. I like it with cereal for breakfast and I like to drink it with dinner. I can deal with that price if it means I won't get osteoperosis in 40 years.
