Because I have a problem. My Daughter and I go through ALOT of MILK!
We are now consuming almost one gallon a day! I bought two Gallons on Sunday and now they are both almost Gone! I need a Cow. Plus since I hit the Convinence Store I end up Paying $3.19!! And I go at least twice a week. What to do??! MY Solution was to get Home Delivery, that would have ended up costing more. Then I think my Solution is Powdered Milk. But does anyone else have any ideas?? |

Funny you would mention Powdered Milk. I used to live in Germany for a while and we had some serious snow storms.
My neighbors switched to powdered milk due to the trouble of having to dredge through the snow to get to the store. After a little time they grew to prefer it over regular grade milk. Theirs is a family of 6. It was funny, they would sometimes bring their own milk to our BBQs because our 1% was too "thick". However, they saved quite a bit on milk money. My mother got a few goats and milks them every day. She gave some to me without me knowing. I couldn't tell the difference! and apparently it is healthier than cow milk. Try the powdered milk route! If you need some adjustment, then mix it with regular milk until you get used to it. |

When our 5 kids were small I would make powdered milk in a pitcher and use it whenever I was baking and needed milk. You couldn't tell the difference. I also would sometimes mix it half and half with regular milk. They rarely noticed. It really did save money.

Alternate milk and water, still allow both of you to drink all you want, but insist on a full glass of water in between.. (or equivalent size, dunno about your kid but mine always spill a full glass!)
After a time of that move to more than equivalent, two water to one milk, heathier for you so long as you still get the calcium you need. (I go with 2/3 full of water to only 1/3 full when they get milk, they still think of it as one to one, but more water goes in and less milk) also try only buying milk once a week, you will run out once or twice but I promise it wont kill you. set a goal of how much milk you will buy (we buy 4 gallons for 4 drinkers a week) then you know how much you can drink in a day, if you are going over up the water..I would try to cut down from one gallon to half overnight though. I have tried mixing powdered with our 1%, but to no luck..no one would drink it (and only I knew it was mixed) I decided to skip it and just drink less real milk, more water. |

I went the powdered milk route for a while. My folks used iit growing up. When it is well mixed and chilled it is palatable. Pekys idea about water is also a good one!

I buy a gallon of whole milk and mix it with an equal amount of water to get 2%. No one in my family can tell the difference. This gives me milk for half the price. At first I mixed it in the jugs but now I mix it as I use it. If a recipe calls for a cup of milk, I measure out a half cup of milk and add a half cup of water.

When all 5 kids are home we go through 8 or 9 gallons of skim milk easily. With 2 in college it's down to about 5 now. If I get it at BJs it's $1.99 a gallon. Here in town it's over $3.00!

I have been using powdered milk since I was in my twenties and I am getting close to 60 now. I only use it for cereal, cooking, and every once in awhile add chocolate powder to it for a glass of chocolate milk. The few times I have had whole milk I couldn't finish it. It was too thick. |

someone had mentioned goats milk earlier on, and i just wanted to add that goats milk is available canned if you wanted to try it. usually right with the evaporated milk in the store.
