you're not an idiot... when i moved out of my moms house i felt like i couldn't cook either... but that's because i was using her standards... it took me awhile to realize that cooking doesn't have to be that complicated...
grill some chicken, steam some veggies... it's easier if you stick to foods that don't have too many ingredients or have things that are common in kitchens...

pasta is super easy... we buy a 5lb bag at SAMs and just boil a cup or two at a time and do whatever we want with it... for us it's versatile...

we can add a sauce or we can add some italian/vinegrette +olives+cheese+whatever for pasta salad or for a quick and easy snack we just put a slice of cheese or two on top (garlic salt for some extra flavor if you want) and microwave it for "homemade" mac and cheese... lol... DH's little sister laughed at us the first time we told her about it but after she tried it she decided she liked it and now she does it too...
