What Do You Grow in Your Garden

I thought it would be interesting to see what people grow in their garden.

I live in the North, so a lot of summer stuff like tomatoes don't grow well here.

I personally prefer perenials. I love plants that I don't have to plant ever again.

My Garden:

1. Peas--these are very labor intensive & require a lot of space, but oh so
worth it. The flavor is far superior than you can get in the store. I
prefer bush peas because they grow better for me & I can get more
plants in an area.
2. Green Beans--gives a lot for very little space & labor. I prefer pole beans
so I don't have to bend over.
3. Green onions--takes up less space than regular & grow better here.
I can also use up the whole plant instead of just the bulb. They freeze
well so long as they're added directly to the dish without being allowed
to thaw. I just freeze in a sandwhich bag of 1 c. & the in freezer bag.
5. Strawberries--can't kill em. If you don't water enough, the berries will
just be small. I also make it into jam.
6. Rhubarb--I hate the stuff, but it was already here. Grows by itself & is
out of my way, so I leave it & give it away when it's ready.
7. Rasberries--I don't like it either, but my girls do. I also make jam out of
it for them.
8. Blueberries--planted them 2 summers ago. Plants still alive, but haven't
produced yet.
9. Aspergus--I'm very excited about this. I just planted it this season. I
bought 2 (or was it 3?) year old crowns, all male. Cost almost $2 per
plant, & I bought 18. In another bed, I planted 36 crowns, but I don't
think they're all males (package didn't say), and the crowns are younger
so I won't be able to harvest for 2 yrs. The 18 plants have already
started growing, but these haven't yet. They were a lot cheaper, so
hopefully they'll grow.

I have blueberries, raspberries, grapes, several different types of apples, pears, and blackberries on the property. I planted 14 tomato plants, some carrots, several pea plants, some radishes, a cucumber plant, and some lettuce in the garden so far. I still have some room so I plan on getting some pumpkin plants to throw in the extra space.

PrincessPerky, with little ones, plant radish seeds. Even if the kids won't eat them, the seeds are cheap and they grow and mature quickly.

My garden is small, it is planted in raised beds filled with rich manure, and fenced in to keep the dog out. He loves fresh vegtables as much as we do. I have; 6 beef steak tomatoes. I also have 2 cucumbers, 1 bell pepper, 1 cayenne pepper, 4 bulbs of heirloom elephant garlic, and one section of heirloom Eqyptian Walking onion. (The onions were originally from my Great Grandmother's garden and she died in 1978.) I have added zinna seeds to the four corners of the garden this year.

Tomatoes are our favorites. They are usually ready July 4th here in NC. The first few tomatoes are eaten striaght from the vine. Then I eat a few Sink Sandwiches (Tomato and mayonaise on white bread that is so messy you have to stand over the sink to eat them.) I freeze tomatoes to make soups and stews over the winter months. And then I make salsa.

I also have a fig tree and a pear tree.

I am getting hungry just thinking about all this tasty food!

Right now I just have tomatoes and green peppers until I can figure out a way to keep the bunnies out. I've heard that mothballs along the fence will deter them-any advice?

I am sure this isn't quite the right answer but I am starting to grow a couple of sunflowers to put in my back yard!! Maybe I could eat the seeds?

we have tomatoes, peppers, garlic, onions, cucumbers, zuchinni, sunflowers (yes we eat the seeds),strawberries, mulberries, carrots, raddishes, dill, basil, parsley, lots of flowers, potatoes, and walnuts.

We have a big herb garden (chives, parsley, basil, mint, thyme, and oregano) that grows well, doesn't take up much space, freezes well, and costs a fortune if you have to buy them in the store, so they're my favorite We also have tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, string beans, spinach, and eggplant, though the only thing we have a lot of success with are the string beans. Hopefully this summer will be better...

That sounds so nice!! I would have a garden like that if I didn't rent, one day when I get my own house I will!! enjoy your garden it sounds great!!

We planted this year tomatos, got one tomato container plant as well that already had some tomatos growing. Cucumbers, eggplant, zuchinni, summer squash, red and green peppers.

Tomatoes (lots and lots), khalrabi, cucumbers, hot peppers, sweet peppers, summer squash and potatoes. Sometimes watermellon.

If the animals leave this stuff alone, we eat well in the fall! I make my own salsa and all I have to buy for it is the spices and the onions.

is there anything I can grow in the house with very little sunlight? I only have one window in my frontroom that I can use and It would be nice to start growing something that the neighbors won't steal. I was considering doing it in my flower bed but I would not get any of my veggies plus I have a sprinkler head right by my window and they over water I mean OVER Water my living room gets wet.

BillsGirl, you don't need a lot of space for an herb garden. I have two window-box sized containers. You could either go that route, or put a few on a windowsill that gets sunlight. It may be worth trying...

You're right. Herbs don't mind small containers or even indoor settings. A pot of parsley and a pot of chives are good starters. (Fresh chives on potatoes, yum)

If your kitchen is really dark, place them close to a light bulb. And don't forget to water once a week.

Just tomatoes and hot peppers which I preserve whole and in homemade salsa . Unfortuantely my neighbor planted a tree that will shade my entire front yard in a few years. I also occasionally forage for dandelion greens and pick and preserve from my red mulberry, pawpaw and hackberry trees on my small urban property. If I had more sunlight available I would put in dwarf fruit trees.

I have tomatoes, green peppers, hot peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and will have onions soon. I have the same bunny problem, BB gun helps alot! But I don't like to watch or know when cuz I feel bad for the scuzzy little rodents who ate all 10 of my tomato plants first time they were planted!

Our house came with strawberries, spearmint, peppermint, chives, and oregano (along with lots of stuff I don't think is edible though you're welcome to my dandylions if you like -- I dug out over 2000 of them this spring!) I know what to do with the strawberries and chives. Any ideas what to do with the mints and oregano?
