Default Powdered Milk?

Is it really cheaper? When would you need to use it? Can it be made to taste like regular milk?

I was raised in a family with four kids and my step mom used it and I have only word for it: NASTY I don't care how you dress it up it is not the same taste as the real stuff. It is cheaper to cook with and stuff but make sure you can use it in your recipe. Some people say when it is cold it is not too bad but I have never been able to forget that taste.

I grew up on it and never had a problem with it. However, now that I use the "real" stuff I'm not sure I could go back. Yes. It's cheaper.

I like to bake with it, but no it doesn't taste the same. Some people don't mind, actually this sounds mean but I don't want it to be, some people dont have as sensitive a palet, so they really don't notice the difference. Others are more than willing to acquire the taste for the cost savings.

I use it for baking, but nothing else. I am not "allowed" to use it as per my husband. He was raised on powdered milk and abhors the stuff now. Sometimes, I do mix it with chocolate milk mix for cocoa for the kids. Most of the cocoa on the market has corn syrup in it and one of my boys reacts badly to corn syrup and I found chocolate milk mix at a local store that doesn't have corn syrup in it.

I was raised on real milk and hate powdered milk...I can have it in cereal, with chocolate or strawberries (read: with added flavor!!)...DD was raised on powdered milk and loves it (yuck!), same thing with my niece....I use it for cooking and still haven't found a recipe that didn't work out ok ...

Yeah, powdered milk is pretty harsh compared to regular milk. That's all my grandmother would have when I'd visit her. Can't stand instant potatoes either.

I remember having it at times when we were growing up. It tastes best when it is ice cold and thoroughly mixed.

I use powdered milk. One reason is that I like to shop as little as possible, and having the powdered milk lets me have "fresh milk" without going to the store. I love the powdered stuff to cook with. My boyfriend makes gravy with it. Buy it bulk; it's much cheaper in my stores than the boxes. I store mine in Red Vines licorice containers that i get from co-workers.

I do not drink milk nor do I have kids; if I did I might buy liquid milk.

I have an unopened box of powdered milk in the cupboard just in case. My hubby said he would use it if needed-Ha! I hate the stuff, but I have found that having canned evaporated milk on hand is wonderful. I use it when making bread, pudding, casseroles, etc. and it just makes stuff taste better. It finally dawned on me why. We drink 1% milk and the canned stuff still has all the fat in and hence the flavor. No wonder people hate powdered milk-it is skim milk, which is a big yuck, I managed to get down to 1% but never could stand skim milk.

My frugal mother kept us going on powdered milk. A few tricks to improve the flavor:

1. Increase the amount of powder to make it richer. Double is great, but savings is obviously less.

2. Make up the powdered milk, and mix 50:50 with regular milk, whatever fat level. My mother actually used to mix it in the real milk carton to fake out my father.

3. Can add in evap milk to richen the flavor. If you have a double punch evap milk opener cap, the can will last in the frig for several weeks, so you can just add in a bit each time you make up the powdered.

MUCH cheaper, IF your family will actually use it.

Cooking, tricky, if it's something to be boiled or cooked, powder can be a problem. If it's going into baked goods, just add the powder into the dry ingredients and the water into the liquid ingredients.

Scroll to the bottom, they have instructions for using evap milk to create regular milk or half and half equivalents.

Oh, yuck! My Mom used to use it when I was little and she had run out of real milk. My brothers and I hated the stuff, and I swore I would never give it to my kids. It's almost the same price now, so I don't have the excuse that it's cheaper...

If you store the powdered milk in the freezer, it doesn't get that stale, yucky taste. I use it to cook with mostly but sometimes mix it to drink. It's not so bad if you mix it ahead and let it get really cold. Also if skim milk is on sale I buy it and mix in some powdered (not adding water).
