Is it worth sewing holes in old socks or is it more efficient to get new ones?
How does one sew up or darn those old socks? |
|
||||
|
I guess what I'll do is sew a small hole and just find a use for the socks with the large holes in them!

...it's easier if you put a lightbulb inside, as it tightens the fabric and then it is easier to sew them....I have a pair that I keep sewing, only because I think they are sooo cute...

I don't know but I have never darned a sock and don't ever intend to. Never felt I was that poor I guess.

don't think darning a sock is a sign of being poor, but it is likely a skill beyond me.
Ds has some holey socks and I keep hoping he will outgrow them before I am faced with that choice . |

i darn--have a sock darner I use (similar to a small wooden light bulb on a stick). can also use a bulb inside or a small babyfood jar. I figure thread is cheaper than new socks!! It is also easier to use a darning needle--that is a curved needle, its made for this purpose!

where would you purchase those items?

walmart. sometimes the curved needles are with the quilting supplies, as some quilters also use quilted needles. but make sure you get a sturdy thick needle-as socks are thick and you will probably use double thread. put in "sock darner" under search in ebay to see what you are looking for--basically mine looks like a wooden egg, with a dowel rod stuck thru it (about 3 bucks). Or, you could get a silver one inlaid with ivory for a couple hundred.... I used to use a light bulb--till I broke it while in the sock and got cut-(I sat on it, so we wont go there...but I figured the $3 to buy one was worth it.) http://cgi.ebay.com/Wooden-Sock-Darn...QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks a million. I guess I can pick a day and do it while listening to music or with a game on the television.

LMAO sorry but that was funny! I personally don't darn socks, I just pitch holey ones and buy new ones. usually by the time there is a hole the bottom of the sock is getting worn thin anyway. I also just bought 12 pair of nice socks on ebay for a total of 7.95. |
