For those of you who make your own baby wipes or have made your own baby wipes, what system did you use?
I'm thinking about using wet face washers to clean and then using a dab of baby lotion on a disposable nappy liner for a final wipe. I figure this way both the cloths and liners are washable so the only money i'll lose from doing this will be the bit of lotion i use. I'll mark all the nappy changing face washers with a fabric pen so they won't get mixed up with the bath washers. What other options are there? |

when DS was first born we used white washclothes (baby sized) but in my house white has always been the color of cleaning rags, not sure why.
Anyway we just used warm water (aquired on the way to change him) then we discovered you had to wash them and we were using disposable diapers so we quit (a whole load for a dozen washcloths?), I am debating with this baby going back to the washable ones, would save a good deal of money, though it would be odd since I insist on the flushable wipes for potty use! |

I did the white washcloth routine. I can get 2 dozen for $1 at the $1 shop, so I had a lot-they can be bleached clean if needed. I just rinsed them, and threw into a diaper pail-when it was full, I washed. The diaper pail had water, soap and vinegar in it--no smell. When full, I dumped the entire thing-water included into the washer, and set it to spin out-then washed as usual-sometimes adding other dirty whites (socks,underwear..). I used a combination of cotton diapers at home and daycare, and disposable ones when out and about. But, I even used the washcloth system when out--had 2 large 1 gallon ziplock bags in the diaper bag--one for damp clean ones, and one to put soiled ones in. I always carried a gallon of water in the back of the van, so if I need to rewet some, I had it. Now that my kids are older, I still keep 2 ziplock bags and washclothes in the back of my suburban--its for those sticky messes they sometimes get into while eating in the vehicle, or if someone gets sick, or you get dirty changing a tire.

I did both the homemade disposables and the cloth wipes. The homemade disposable wipes were very inexpensive and lasted a fairly long time. When I was using cloth dipes for DD, using cloth wipes and washing them wasn't any big deal.

I've had my son in disposable nappies since he was born. The laundry here is really small and there are 5 adults in the house so it was going to be too hard to find the room to soak cloths. I'm switching to cloth once i have moved so it just makes sense for me to use washable wipes too.

I used cheap, soft wash cloths and cut them in half. Placing them in a resealable container I took distilled water, a few drops of aloe vera juice and a few drops of castile soap. It worked well.
During the times that he had a bit of nappie rash I added two drops of tea tree oil to the mixture. Between the tea tree oil and the aloe it healed him ASAP. |
