Free software
Do you have a home computer, and wish you had a nice office suite, like Microsoft Office? Waaay too expensive! Well, the Open Source Software community has provided a wonderful, FREE software suite called OpenOffice. It has the equivalents of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Paint and Access.
I use it at home, exclusively. I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link here, but you can find it through Google.
A word of advice. Don't sign up for the community emails, or you'll get way more than you want. I did, at first, but it's easy to remove yourself from the list.
Open Source software is non-proprietary (unlike Microsoft) that is created by the programming contributions of it's programming members. Firefox is the most recognized result of such collaberative efforts. I'm not a programmer, but I love the concept, and so far, with what I've tried, I love the products too.
I use OpenOffice, the Firefox browser (from Mozilla), Thunderbird and Sunbird (email and calendar, replaces Outlook and Outlook Express, also from Mozilla). All free. All really good. All run on Windows. All have community support bulletin boards for when I need assistance.
So if you're looking for free software for these purposes, check out OpenOffice and Mozilla. (.org) Read about them. See if they might suit your needs.
(I am not affiliated with these in any way. I just use them, trust them for security reasons, and love that they're free and non-Microsoft.)
