Default Returning Items

I was talking with a friend over the weekend and we went to his garage where there was a whole section of merchandise that had something wrong with it. I asked him why he didn't return it to the store for a refund or exchange and he just said he couldn't be bothered. He had several hundred dollars at a minimum that he lost because he couldn't be bothered!

The Better Business Beurea says "if the goods you have purchased were misrepresented or are defective, you have every reason to expect the store to provide a suitable substitute or refund, or make proper repairs. The laws in all states require a store to make good in such cases."

If you purchase something and it doesn't work properly, make sure you get your refund.

Your friend is crazy! He should check to see if he could still return some of the things. Some stores have no time limit or a really long one. At the very least he could get some merchandise credit.

I keep box for atleast 30 days and then receipt of anything electric goes into our warranty drawer. I just had to return a hedge trimmer to Home depot that we bought in March. It stopped working. DH wanted to just go out and buy a new one. I said a hedge trimmer should last more than 4 months. Home Depot gave us a bit of a fuss but the manager gave us an even exchange.

Sears is really good about standing behind their products. My mother had an iron that was atleast 3-5 years old and they had a no problems exchanging it when she had a problem with it.

Here is my confession - when it comes to food items, I am terrible about returning them. For example, if I get home and the milk is already bad, I'll set it aside in the frig intending to return it, but then never do.

It is a weakness on my part - I am afraid of confrontation. Isn't that silly? *I* didn't do anything wrong, and yet I am afraid of 'making someone else feel bad' by returning a faulty item.

So there's my confession. I'll promise here and now that the next time I get bad milk (it's always bad dairy products, it seems) I WILL RETURN IT!

I guess I should make the same promise too. I find that I don't return less expensive items because of the hassle that is usually involved, but that really isn't a good reason not to do it. Especially if I am at the store anyway shopping for something else. So I will also promise to return the next purchase, no matter how small, that doesn't live up to the advertised standards.

I know, I know. Believe me, I tried to tell him, but he just shrugged his shoulders. The funny things is he won't throw it out. I said if he wasn't going to use the stuff, would he mind if I took it. He wanted to keep it. Go figure???
